"Scrubbing the Tiles"

"There was something rather satisfying, she found, in scrubbing the tiles of the kitchen floor. The clean, sweet-smelling wetness, which grew as she retreated backwards from it on her knees, delighted her, and although she doubted if anyone would ever notice the result of her labors, she was content with her small reward of a job well done."

Anna, in 1985 both Miss Read and I had a 30th anniversary -- for me it was my birthday and for her it was the 30th year of her first book being published. I wrote to her via her publisher Michael Joseph and we enjoyed a plesant exchange of letters. She was an absolute delight, a very charming lady.

I love Miss Read too! And do you know the books are available on CD at the library? I love to listen as I stitch.

What a great quote! Thank you.

And I want to tell you what a welcome addition to my blog reader the return of your posts is! I missed them during your sabbatical.

Do you know how many times I pass her books at work, and *intend* to read them one day? Hopefully, I'll really get around to it!

I had never heard of Miss Read. But I appreciate the goodness of doing an unseen chore and knowing you've gone a fine job, so I think I may have to seek her out now. Thank you for the reminder!

This is one of my favorite Miss Read books. :)

I had a friend who always scrubbed her kitchen floor by hand. She felt nothing else got it as clean and shiny.

I must admit, I love all things clean but I'm satisfied with my mop.
