In Savannah

Amazingly, everything fit into the back of the van, and everyone still had a seat.

We headed back into some heat and humidity.

Dropped off the dorm stuff, met the roommate, drove around town just a little: Savannah is just as enchanting as everyone says.

Went out to dinner. It was delicious and no one was wanting to argue with the constant cool ocean breeze.

But we all felt a little, what shall I say, funny?

A little bit of heartbreak when I took Daisy to the potty, and while washing her hands she asked trustfully, "Is this Felix's Christmas trip?" When I explained that we were here so that Giles could start living in his new room she said, "You mean he isn't going to live at home anymore at all?" Oh dear, I don't think she has been listening the last few months.

At least, she won't be bothered by him loving on her *all the time*.

More Savannah tomorrow.

  1. Savannah! So beautiful, I've heard. Glad you were all able to enjoy.

Today marks the fifth anniversary of me leaving home and moving almost 2000 miles away...I left my sister, who was seven at the time--but with visits and phone calls and letters, and now internet, we still have a wonderful relationship!

  4. Poor Daisy! That must have been hard on your mama heart! My firstborn is a freshman this year but we are all so very thankful he is commuting. Hard stuff, this growing up and away business.

  5. Makes my heart break all over. I'm the last of six and I remember dropping off my oldest sister at college and crying all the way home (4 hour trip). Then when my brother and sister left after Christmas vacation it started all over.

The heart is sad only because it has loved so much. Hope everyone including Giles is adjusting.

  6. I know he will do well. You have done a great job in 'training up a child in the way he should go'...

  8. I grew up in Savannah, and my family still lives there. Savannah Christian Church is wonderful, and they have services in the Savannah theater downtown (geared at SCAD students). Giles should check it out! -melissa

  11. I am praying for you! This reminded me of the day we took our son to college in the Seattle area. We were so glad to see him follow God's plan for his life but it's hard to let go and see them move into 'adult' life. ~Adrienne~

  12. My turn is coming soon for my oldest . . . Our quiverful of arrows eventually have to be shot out into the world. Sniff.

As always, I love your precious pictures.

  13. Anna -

We love the Crab Shack...I was there Saturday night, as a matter of fact...

Savannah and Tybee are a feast for the eyes and I imagine Giles will take some great pictures.

Enjoy the rest of your stay!

  14. When I was a wee lass, my oldest brother (and best friend) went away to grad school. It was terrible.

I love Savannah. Hopefully you'll get to visit more. :)

  15. We love Savannah. We travel down there a few times a year as we live in Atlanta. I hope Giles does well there! I hope your heart heals in his absence.

  16. Anna-my boys are 6 and under...and how I pray that they will continue to love one another as your children do as the mature and leave the home...how sweet and tender the heartache to see your children miss one another.

  17. What a weekend of mixed emotions for all! We have friends going to Savannah next month. I am so jealous!

When we took our daughter 11 hours away to college, we got out of bed in the middle of the night 2 months later and drove the 11 hours to see her because we were missing her. We made a total of 5 trips that year, driving that 11 hours just to see our baby. It was a beautiful drive and worth every minute of it.

  18. Actually, one of those trips we flew. :o)

  19. LOVE Savannah! SCAD was my dream college, though reality has been great. I have to remind myself that I wouldn't have met my beau if I was at SCAD.

    Also love the Crab Shack.

  20. I remember when my older brother went away to college, it was heartbreaking, but oh what fun we had going to pick him up and drop him off in that beautiful little town of MA! How we miss them when they go, but they'll be back one day... how we love them so.

  21. Crab Shack is a favorite of ours too.

Anne, if Giles wants some great pics of the Beach while he is there go to the Light House and Park behind the Museum. IT is the best place to park at Tybee. There is a small beach type restauant back behind there that is perfect to grab a snack after taking pics of the ships coming in and out of the port, the rock line is beautiful and the birds are abundant.

I hope you enjoy you time together as a family. Those last moments can be so precious.

    Carmen
