A fun modern pattern (Butterick 5030) in a simple wrap shape.
This cotton is a little stiff to drape well for this dress, but I do love the print. I made the sash to wear with it, but it's not necessary. And if you leave it off,
then you can enjoy the fun button that closes the waist.
I did have to put major darts in the neckline to keep it from gaping enormously. I didn't realize they would be needed until after I put the facings in (hear me sighing as I rip out stitching). It's fine for messing around in, but I won't be wearing it to meet the queen.

When you're shopping for fabric for clothing do you simply look for prints or patterns that catch your eye, or do you have preferences about the type of fabric you buy as well (ie cotton or polyester, or a mix etc)
This dress is very beautiful. You made a very nice pattern. Wrap yourself invigorating color. Wrap Dress is a delight to the senses. Soft organic cotton is dyed in vibrant shades.

I "hear" the frustration in your voice and feel your pain! I just spent yesterday evening trying to match up bodice/skirt seams with a very demanding zipper. I'm about ready to toss the whole thing and get a new pattern.

ReplyDeleteOoh, I LOVE it! I have been admiring that pattern and now I really want to get it and make a few dresses from it. It looks like it would make a practical dress to wear with a nursing infant which I will have quite soon. I love the darling little button at the waist! Too cute!

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately my last project was a disgrace...copied my fav skirt...so simple right? turned out too big in the waist and way way WAY too tight on the hips...oiy!
I, too, have encountered gaping necklines where the fit is otherwise good. My dressform helps me the most with that adjustment. I just made Simplicity 3875 yesterday, and I actually sewed down the overlap part of the neck just to keep it from hanging open. I used a busy print, so I don't think it will be obvious I did that.

ReplyDeletethis dress is simply lovely! I found it while googling Cotton Wrap Dresses ... i think the cotton is perfectly stiff to stand firmly - you should make more and sell them, it will be a popular buy for curvy women who need structure in the fabric
ReplyDeleteCheck out a designer version which sells for hundreds and another popular seller on metrostyle which is a stiff plain mono colour. Your version with the detailed fabric and detail buttons would retail about $150-200 in a department store
