The undauntable Bella created a Boston cream pie--two vanilla sponge cake layers, a pastry cream filling, and a chocolate ganache to pour over the top. I've noticed that she's very much inspired by beautiful food photography in a cookbook. She's something of a concrete thinker, and the pictures make the recipes seem very doable to her.

ReplyDeleteI don't have a child who thinks that way- I am the one who does. Must have pretty photos of the food. That's why I like the MS Everyday Food little magazines. And I have the Nigella one as well.

ReplyDeleteYum! I can relate to Bella's preference for recipes with photos. Though I tend to be very creative in the kitchen and love even working without recipes (let alone pictures), I get much more excited about trying a recipe if there is a pretty picture accompanying it :) I sort of figure, if it was lovely enough on the plate that someone wanted to photograph it, it must be worth trying!

My husband and I enjoyed watching Nigella years ago. Anna, you kind of remind me of her now that I think about it! Great job Bella...and what a lovely trip the two of you had. All the Mamas are planning for next school year and I am reminded of all the margin you mentioned having for your little ones (we need a lot of margin and time at home).

I'm another one of those who prefers an accompanying picture. It's partly because I feel very much like a novice, and knowing how it's supposed to look gives me something to aim for. I'm also more of a visual learner, and a photo makes me feel like I'm seeing the recipe rather than just 'hearing' it, which is the sense I get from mere instructions.

Oh yeah. Beings as I grew up in Boston I got a Boston Creme Pie every birthday. With a smiley face made with a banana. Either that or Swedish Princess Torte -- have Bella check that one out and let her go to town!

ReplyDeleteI too, love how beautiful food can look in magazines and cookbooks. That's how I came to realize that being in the kitchen was definitely my passion. I love photographing the food I make and am always challenging myself both with cooking and baking as well as the photography!

Mmmmmm, yum! I love my Australian Women's Weekly cookbooks, because every recipe is pictured. Like Bella, pictures inspire me before words in a recipe do.

This is my favorite cookbook--I think all the recipes are very easy and always turn out elegant and yummy!
