An apartment with a kitchen means that Giles can start cooking for himself: things that he can actually eat. Last year he subsisted on multiple sub sandwiches a day from the cafeteria. Dairy-free is hard to do.
The Composer took him to the supermarket before leaving him for the year, and with his list in hand, he did what may have been his first grocery shopping (not counting the odd item pick-up for me now and then).
Except for the burner catching on fire (someone else's old grease apparently), all went well. And he sent a picture of his nicely-plated dinner to prove it.
Wow! He did very well. Did he feed the roommates, or let them alone to salivate?
ReplyDeleteWell done, Giles. My boys like fried Italian sausages sliced up in their spaghetti sauce as a change from ground beef every now and then.
ReplyDeleteWell done for your son! Looks yummy!

If I can leave such a culinary and healthful impression on my son as to include a salad with his dinner when I'm not watching over him, then I will consider myself a successful mother! :)
ReplyDeleteGood going, Giles! Are you going to send him your recipes?
ReplyDeleteFor Christmas last year I bought a pretty binder and matching paper to print out my daughter's favorite recipes, and some old standards, for her first college apartment.
ReplyDeleteI have a dairy and gluten allergy, so I can relate! I ate cafeteria chili and rice with tomato sauce for most of the year, and am also glad to be able to cook for myself this year.:)
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the steam rising from the spaghetti! Too cool! He's doing better than I did in college and my first year of marriage :)!
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe how many comments you received for the giveaway! Amazing!
Great job! and Great picture!!!
ReplyDeleteI also can't eat dairy either it is tough.

In an age where most college boys would order a pizza 7 nights a week before they'd tackle a stovetop, Giles' dinner is *most* impressive. Great photo, too--a double winner!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a magazine picture.....kudos to Giles.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet his roomates were ready to assign
him the job of cook.
What does he have with his spaghetti and salad? Looks yummy!
ReplyDeletethis is a wonderful picture! great job. definitely a food-stylist type of picture for a cookbook or magazine!
ReplyDeleteI love that the steam rising from his plate is visible. Too visceral. Now I will have to run to cook spaghetti at 11pm.
ReplyDeleteI love the way the camera captured the steam rising from the freshly served food. The essence of good food and good photography!
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet that he sent you a picture of his first homemade dinner. No matter the miles, you're still Mom!
ReplyDeleteWell done, Giles - and well done dad and mom - you've taught him admirably! I love that he sent home a picture too - what a terrific sense of accomplishment. You must really miss both your fine young fellows this year. I'm not looking forward to the 'letting go' part of parenting, but we're taking a page from your book and encouraging independence and a sense of purpose. Knowing God has made our children for His good purposes and gifted them accordingly makes encouraging them to flourish quite natural, somehow.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Giles! It looks delicious and I'm sure it tasted the same. :-)
