Fait Accompli
Fitzwilliam is successfully neutered. Very impressed by the vet doing this on my dining room floor *without* using glasses. I guess he is a couple of years younger than I am.
He suggested we put Fitzwilliam on a towel in the big clawfoot bathtub, closing the bathroom door, to give him a safe place to come out of his anesthesia. I had my doubts that even that big antique tub could contain this cat, but I went ahead with the plan.
Ten minutes later I opened the bathroom door to check on him, and he was careening around the little bathroom. He panicked at the sight of company and wonkily tried to jump onto the tiny windowsills. That didn't work, so he went for the sink and made it. He barely fits in the sink, he's so big, and he accidentally turned the cold water tap on full blast as he landed, so that wasn't so good.
Torn between sympathy and cracking up, I got him out and back onto a towel and the rest of his recover was, as they say, uneventful.
That's one handsome fellow. As a vet, I have to say that many of my clients couldn't handle anesthesia recovery on their own--sounds like you were cool and collected :^)
ReplyDeleteHa! Poor Fitzwilliam - the final cold water step really topped off the insult to injury effect.
ReplyDeleteGracious! What a story! I love your blog - and have never commented before - but couldn't pass this one!! Poor Fitzwilliam!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this wonderful blog!
awww....poor kitty. He's lucky to have a good nurse on hand to attend to him......even if you did laugh! :oD
ReplyDeleteThanks for the entertaining update!
ReplyDeleteOh my! Bless his heart! :) That reminds me of how our cat, Abbey, got a lego stuck on her tooth. I couldn't get it off! I took her in to the vet, and you should have seen him and his assistants unsuccessfully trying to contain their laughter. She looked so ridiculous with her "lego fang". It was an undignified plight indeed! He got it off with his pliers without too much incident. :)
ReplyDeleteBless Fitzwilliam's sweet kitty heart... and yours too, for having him neutered without the additional trauma of going to the vet's office. Hope Mr. Kitty is back in his element soon.
ReplyDeleteHome births, home neuterings, hey, let's just bring back the house calling docs and James Herriots! Oh, and I'll take home delivered raw milk, too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous cat! And I love his name! If only his twin would show up in our back yard....
ReplyDelete~Kate
His twin sister lives at my house, her name is Chloe.....Too bad her name isn't Georgiana, that would be a hoot! ;o)
ReplyDeleteI wonder, just HOW big is he?
ReplyDeleteIt's a funny story. I hope Fitzwilliam does not mind me having had a good laugh at his expense... and that he's fine again.
Well, Hana-Marmota, I tried to measure him while he was eating and I think from nose to tip of tail he was about 34 inches! He can see out my windows without jumping onto the sill, he just puts his front feet up and looks out.
ReplyDeleteBut, is Frederick safe from Fitzwilliam?
ReplyDeleteHis cage has kept him safe for three years and counting. He and Fitzwilliam won't share any free time that I can foresee.
ReplyDeletePoor Fitzwilliam! I'm glad he's adjusted. We've been adopted by a wandering kitty too - his name is Peppermint, named after a kitty in a Little Golden Book our children loved. I didn't know vets made house calls - we put poor Minty through the trauma of going to the vet's office for his little surgery and he is still terrified of the carrier. He is almost 6 years old, and is usually an outdoor kitty except for during cold snaps when he takes up residence in the sunroom at night. However this winter he's decided to be a kitty of leisure and is in most of the time!
ReplyDeletePoor Fitzwilliam. He is a big boy though! I think he is about as big as my Maine Coon!
ReplyDeleteI am guessing he didn't care for his bath!;)
Poor boy! I adore his name. I take it your family loves Pride and Prejudice.
ReplyDeleteOh my! I wonder what Daisy's notebook will record about that event, a Fitzwilliam Alert if there was ever one! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for being a responsible pet owner - if only everyone neutered and spayed their pets. I hope Fitzwilliam is feeling better now. I love the lego-tooth story too, it's gorgeous!
