Vintage Fifties Dress: Advance 6798

I got this pattern several months ago to make a cooler-weather dress with. I love Miss Snooty on the left with her nose in the air! I made it up in a nice quality cotton, using the longer sleeves:

I didn't have quite enough fabric so I faced these so-fabulous cuffs with a co-ordinating print from the scrapbag:

I have been very happy with my last few vintage projects. I've found that the bust and waist darts fit exactly right, out of the package, which is almost uncanny. With modern patterns I find it necessary to fit every bodice to my dress form in order to get a nice fit and the smaller amount of ease I like. I think modern sewing patterns are just designed to be super-baggy, and I think I am built with a New Look bodice.

  2. Anna,

I love, love, love!!! that dress!!! Please tell me how you learned to sew. I would really like to learn, but I have no idea where to start.

Your dress looks so professional and the material is fabulous. So very pretty. Do you wear these vintage dresses around town? What kind of comments do you get? :-)

  3. Anna,
That is so so beautiful! I love the material, and I know it is one of your favorite colors. I got my machine, and am eager to look for some fabric soon. I could never attempt to sew clothes for myself, but I am going to try to learn for my 8 year old daughter, and sew some pretty things for her birthday in June. Her color is blue(mine is too, and plum) so I will be scouring for blue florals and such. Any suggestions on simple sewing presents for her? You just amaze me with your talent!

  4. I love the cordinating material inside the cuffs! That adds such a cute, original flare. I love the vintage dresses you make. Where do you get your material? I always love your choices.
I just got a whole paper bag full of vintage patterns at a flea market this summer and a few of them are that same brand, "ADVANCE". Are the instructions very hard to follow with those older ones?

  6. I've found the same thing true: vintage patterns do fit better. I nearly always have to grade them up for my size, but after that few adjustments are necessary. Your dress is sweet and sooo pretty!

Okay...you are smart, you can cook, you are a good wife and mom, you can decorate, you can sew...do you have a seventeen year old sister I can introduce to my son?

  10. Thank you for sharing! All of your sewing projects are so inspiring. Since discovering your site, I have been picking up vintage patterns. I always passed them by before because the art was out-dated. The fabrics you pick really harmonize with the styles.
