Made for my dear friend and neighbor Phyllis; we are spurring each other on to be better stewards of Creation.
Since Phyllis is an artist I did my best to make these appealing to her unique sensibility: colorful, graphic, not at all fussy and not really girly.
I enjoyed the challenge of designing something pleasing using only plain and simple fabrics, ones I would ordinarily pass over. But even bland and utilitarian can be made fun with some piecing and cutting and stitching . . .
Great job!
ReplyDeleteI think they are delightful and I am sure she will be so pleased to receive them. BTW, I made the apple cranberry cake recipe you posted the other day and it was delicious! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm sure that Phyllis will love that you took the time and effort to make something that she would especially like! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting a tutorial for the bags. What a blessing for your neighbor, Phyllis! I found some thick fabric at a thrift store last week that would be perfect for them. I plan to make some soon for presents.
ReplyDeleteI also tried your apple/cranberry upside down cake, and my family LOVES it. I posted a picture of mine that I made Saturday, with a link back to yours. Thanks for sharing it!
Have a blessed day.
I love them! I bought those canvas bags at Hobby Lobby for $1.00 each (on sale) and use them for shopping.
ReplyDeleteBut I am not stylin' like Phillis will be.
I bought fabric yesterday for my bags! I can hardly wait till I have a moment to sew...
ReplyDeleteso cute...I love the simple look as well as the foofy!

Hello!
ReplyDeleteFirst, I love your blog. Stumbled upon it a few weeks ago, and have checked it often ever since.
In a previous post, you mentioned using a tablecloth for the bags. How did that work for you? Were the bags sturdy enough? I have several adorable tablecloths and am trying to figure out how to make somewhat sturdy bags with them. I'm not making them necessarily for groceries, but since they will be gifts for fellow college students or friends with children, they need to hold up reasonably well. What do you think?
Thanks! :-)

We are staunch supporters of cloth grocery bags in my house. I use totes that I've been given for various events, and different things, but these are so much prettier! I will have to make a few pretty ones and leave the plain canvas totes in the trunk of my boyfriends car.
ReplyDelete(we keep our canvas totes in the trunks of our cars, so we always have them when we need them)
I love the bags. There's something about geometic type decorations that really appeals to me.
ReplyDeleteKelsey--
ReplyDeleteIf you line your tablecloth fabric with something heavy-duty that might work. Or how about using the tablecloth as lining for a solid color, with some simple appliqued shapes on the outside from the tablecloth also? Mine seem like they will hold up very well, but the tablecloth was in great condition.
Anna,
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using the table cloth as lining... a surprise, hidden luxury every time one opens the bag. Thanks for the advice. :-)

I just want to thank you for being so inspiring and so gracious as to show us step by step. Yesterday my children and I picked through the scrap bins at a local fabric store. I found the "perfect" fabric just waiting to become a new bag!
ReplyDeleteThe bags are really cute. I saw a red and green one in a magazine, using the same colors as you did, that I've been dreaming about. This one was red with a big green fabric bow hanging underneath one handle. Your red bag made me think of it once again. (can you tell I want one?)
ReplyDeleteI hope it's ok that I linked to this post! It's in a very positive post at http://hopewellmomschoolreborn.blogspot.com/
