" 'Well, I'm nearly ready now,' answered Mrs. Beaver at last allowing her husband to help her into her snow boots. 'I suppose the sewing machine's too heavy to bring?'
'Yes. It is,' said Mr. Beaver. 'A great deal too heavy.'
--C. S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
This is one of MY favorite books, as well as movies, and NO Anna, you cannot take your sewing machine!

My heart always drops for Mrs. Beaver every time I read that. Life can be so painful...
ReplyDeleteHow entertaining of you to quote that in the context of your own packing! :)
ReplyDeleteWhere are you headed to find slopes and snow?
Aww, what a shame. I'm sure SOMETHING would have turned up as a creative spark or mending to be done. :)
ReplyDeleteHowever, knitting needles and yarn would NOT be too heavy!
ReplyDeleteThe L, the W and the W is one of the greatest books ever written!

I love when we find ourselves in books! Maybe you could take your knitting...
ReplyDeleteAre you just naturally good at quoteing books always having one hand and memorized? Or do you have a book that you have quotes that you loved written down and pull them out? Do tell your secret!
ReplyDeleteThe kids and I just finished reading that book and I was so surprised that I enjoyed reading it (first time I ever read it).
ReplyDeleteIn honor of the book, we bought some Turkish Delight this week. I liked it all right - but the kids were not too crazy about it.
I think it was still fun to try something from the book, which they both thoroughly enjoyed too.
I always loved that part of the book! Have a great and safe time on vacation.

Wonderful quote! Such a classic C.S. Lewis touch of humor.
ReplyDeleteJust learned at church yesterday of a missionary fleeing a political coup; she could not take her sewing machine (too heavy). Instead, she threw away the bobbins so the marauders could not enjoy her machine!

Poor Mrs. Beaver
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that quote! And the book. . .let us know if you take some handwork along!
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind, but I've tagged you to share 7 weird or random facts about yourself.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy your vacation!
Often, I don't read the quotes you post, but in this case, it made me laugh at loud. That quote befits you perfectly! I can just picture the Composer stating matter-of-factly, "Yes, it's a great DEAL to heavy." :-D :-D
ReplyDeleteAlso hope you have a wonderful trip.
