Japanese Painted Fern

Deciding not to spend any more money on plants is the best thing I've ever done for my garden. It has caused me to *finally* do the designing the books all call for--masses of the same plant planted in big swaths. I get these swaths by dividing my successful plants, or digging up their babies and moving them.

My other source of garden material is my gardening friends. The ones whose gardens are so glorious that every spring they have to throw out Perfectly Good Plants because there's just too much growing in the beds. These people are my best friends right now.

And one has given me a Japanese Painted Fern, I guess one that was bothering her by growing too well. Glad I could help.

  2. For sure! This is how I get most of my stuff, too. Joining a garden club was brilliant; I am practically begged to take plants. And my neighbor just gave me 17 hosta plants that she *had* to get rid of...no problem! {It also helps to have a father-in-law who is obsessed with bulbs--something like 40,000 flower bulbs in his garden.}

  3. I do love ferns...we've got some that grow naturally off the cliff behind our house and I feel as though I've stepped back in time whenever I walk by them.
    Beautiful!

  6. I was so excited this week when I found half a dozen hostas growing underneath some trees in a forgotten part of the yard.(from the previous owners) I transplanted them where they would be seen, in front of the porch. Free money.

  7. We gathered unused bricks from around our place, and transplanted ferns from everywhere we could, planted them around the little brick patio area, plopped two adirondack chairs in the middle of it all and it makes me smile to watch those ferns pop up in early spring, then continue to enjoy them showing off just how fast they can grow. Fast!

  9. I could do with a few friends like that. And by the by, I think I may have the very same shoes as your good self. Clearly, we have great taste...:)

  10. I would love to see pics too! I have seen several signs for "plant swaps" in our area. I couldn't contribute this year but next year, I will be there!!!

  12. I just love it when you have friends who garden and have too many plants. A friend of ours from our church gave us some tomatoes and peppers for our garden this year, that otherwise we would not have planted due to it being so expensive here in D.C. to buy them. We were also very happy when she let us borrow her growing lights for our littles starters here in our house last spring. I love the fern, ferns always make me think of wonderful nature walks in the woods and believe it or not moss which makes me imensely happy. I love your blog and have nto commented before, but I am LadyAnn on the S&S forum.

    God bless,
    Rebecca
