Daisy and I are loving these together--they are the very volumes from my own childhood, an edition from the mid-Seventies. I love all the illustrations--the original artwork, the photography, the graphic design. And Daisy loves passing on the interesting factual tidbits to the rest of the family.
I can very easily visualize sweet Daisy being helpful and generous in teaching and passing along her knowledge...just like her Mommy!
ReplyDeleteThat edition of the series is a favorite read aloud at our house too...
ReplyDeleteWe like the travel volume. :)
All's grace,
Ann
My little brother does the same with his bird books - every day a new fact at dinner about a bird I have never heard of! we love it
ReplyDeleteWe've been enjoying our copy of the set too - the ones that were mine from the mid-eighties. :O)
ReplyDeleteIt's so fun to watch my little one pore over them!
I grew up with those too - read the daylights out of them! Wonderful, wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOh how strange, I grew up (in Australia) with these books too and loved them. They gave me a love of information and especially maths. They were special books that we could only look at in the classroom after we had completed our work. A treat indeed.
ReplyDeleteJulie in Australia
We have those at the library - but probably from the '80s.
ReplyDeleteI love Childcraft! My dad was such a sucker for anything educational that he bought them all from a door-to-door salesman when I was a baby!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the trip down memory lane! :D
My mom got rid of mine in an effort to declutter. :( If she had asked me beforehand, I would have gladly taken them off her hands!
ReplyDeleteI remember those from when I was young. I always enjoyed reading them.
ReplyDeletehow funny! My almost 4 year old just discovered my ChildCraft set from my childhood. My mom bought them from a traveling salesman when I was a baby. We read about statues today.
ReplyDeleteoooh, I so remember the many hours of joy in thumbing through our set of childcraft books - I just loved the arts and crafts one - always bugging my mom to let me do some project!
ReplyDeleteI have an entire collection of Child Craft and have loved them for years!
ReplyDeleteI love these too...but mine are from the sixties...so they were red and cream. :o) I would love to find the pic that the salesman gave to those who bought a full set. My children also enjoyed these so much.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a fun series!
ReplyDeleteMy kids are just now getting into the ones I have from my childhood. Ours are a little "newer" but what is funny about them is that when we were younger we turned them into "laptops" by taping a sheet of paper to the inside of the front cover of several of them. We drew keyboards and screens. What fun to look back on now! My kids have more fun playing with them than they do reading them, but when we start school up soon, we will actually be reading them.
ReplyDeleteOh! I grew up with the same set of books not sure which year, but part of my parent's encyclopedia set. My 6 year old daughter loves them and begs her grandfather to loan her one every time she visit! Thanks for the memory
ReplyDeleteI lived in those Childcraft books when I was little.
ReplyDeleteMine were from my sister's set - 1968. I remember the technology book had grand ideas about the future dishwashing machine.
We didn't have one growing up (I still don't) so it is still a fantasy for me!
Yes!!! I ate those up as a child, though I think mine were 1960's editions that my parents got used.
ReplyDeleteWe had a complete set of Childcraft too, bought from my aunt, who was a Childcraft salesman. My children and I spent many hours poring over them. They were cream and green.
ReplyDeleteBama Girl, is the picture you were talking about coming with the set two-sided, one of "country" things and the other a city? If so, I have ours still and hung it on the wall when I taught pre-school.
Oh how I love my childcrafts. I still have the edition from my childhood as well and we pore over them frequently.
ReplyDeleteYes! Love these.
ReplyDeleteShortly after I married my husband, his mother shipped us his childhood set from the early 70's. At first I thought, "geez, where will I store these?". Now that our children are six and eight, the books have new purpose and are well enjoyed! Much of their contents are timeless.

Ah yes, I remember those from my childhood! I still have them in my basement. I don't have vintage versions though (I wish I did)...mine are from the 90's.
ReplyDeleteI remember my grandmother having a set of these books.
ReplyDeleteMy parents have a set of these that I grew up reading. I loved the volume of poems. My favorite was The Highwayman - loved the illustrations!!!
