A State Park to Ourselves

Where was everybody? Our beautiful state park was oddly empty in this unbelievably cool weather.

So cool that Giles built a fire for the girls to keep warm around.

Bella had made us a pot of sloppy joe filling. Heating it up at our picnic site was just the right amount of cooking for a picnic.

Dessert we cooked at home, right before we came. Rich flourless chocolate cookies from this month's Everyday Foods. Ingredients: sugar, cocoa, chocolate, egg whites, salt. Pretty easy!

Yes, the park was empty of people, but we were visited by a bold skunk.

No doubt he was stepping out to watch the sunset. It was worth coming out of your burrow for.

Lights blooming in the deep blue valley.

  2. I am intrigued...what state park is this? We would love to visit it. You guys always find such wonderful places to explore! Love the pictures. I don't know if I have commented before...I pop in quite often to see what new things you have put on the blog. We (family of 8) live in West TN. We homeschool and I sew. So, I love to read your posts about homeschool, sewing and cooking. :)

  6. I just picked up that same copy--this one looks really good!

Camping at state parks brings back lots of memories of my childhood; I still prefer a campfire in the pines to a beach! Happy days :)

  8. Looks like a great day! Our bunch loves to be outdoors, whether at a formal activity, or just being outdoors.

I have celiac and am always on the lookout for gluten free recipes. Your cookies look yum-o. Would you please share the recipe?
    Thanks!

  9. You know there have been rumours circling that many state parks were closing. I understand that a few are, but the rumour may be keeping people from making a trip out to visit them, which is unfortunate...or fortunate in your case I suppose.
    Those cookies look just delicious!

  15. I saw the cookie recipe and have been meaning to try it, now I'm inspired to do so...thanks!
I love it when we stumble on some place that has been forgotten for the day, it feel like we've discovered a treasure!
One last thing, have you considered doing a Linky sort of thing for the vintage dinner? I'd love it if you did because I'd love to participate...but, if you don't want to do a linky...then would you mind if I did a week of vintage dinners and give credit to you for the idea?

  16. where is this wonderful beautiful place that makes me yearn for Autumn and cool weather? I can almost see and smell the smoke from the fire and brisk air as you'll stand on the cliff overlook. It's a breathtaking view! And the night photo, I can imagine there were a million stars in your sky that night.

  17. You have me so used to close ups in your blog that to see the number of wide shots in this post is quite different...but just as enjoyable! :-) We too have had near record cold temps this summer.
    Thanks for your blog.

  20. I have been trying to find the recipe for chocolate flourless cookies also, and the only one I can find from Everyday Food is for peanut chocolate cookies...are those by chance the same ones you made?
