The Messiah

Both the girls' music teachers suggested they sing in a choir, so I signed them up for our Community Chorale, and myself with them since I had to drive them on Monday nights anyway. As soon as the Composer found out we were singing The Messiah, he hopped on board too.

What was meant as enrichment for the girls has become a weekly joy for all of us. I would never have predicted that our fall would be informed by Handel's glorious music and so much fantastic Scripture memorized effortlessly, but it has!

  4. How lovely for the four of you. One of my Christmas pleasures each year is watching on TV an English male choir singing the Messiah.

  6. When I was in high school I was allowed to join the local college choir and participated in singing The Messiah. It was a marvelously educational and moving experience for me on many levels.
Someday, I will sing it again....perhaps when my children are old enough to sing it along with me.

  8. I love to play my recording of it every Easter - my favorite part is "I Know that my Redeemer Liveth".

  9. I never comment, but I must say, there's just NOTHING like singing the Messiah. I can relate exactly with what you must be experiencing, participating for the first time. A wonderful way to lead up to the holiday season and prepare for the celebration of Christ's birth.

  12. Just seeing the scores brings back such fond memories. I used to have the entire piece memorized (in alto lol) but it's been a number years now. I may have to do something about that!

  14. I love singing The Messiah! I have a great set of CDs that we play year round, too. My alma mater invites alumni back to sing with the students every few years. Fantastic.

  15. We are singers in our family and every Christmas, we sing And the Glory of the Lord, For Unto Us and the Hallelujah chorus. We sing along with an orchestral recording -- no voices except ours. It's one of our favorite holiday traditions.

    Have a wonderful time.

  16. Oh Joy! I am so encouraged by all of these comments. I am *all* about having our young children along in regular life, but wanted to mention that my little ones have enjoyed the Classical Kids CD about Handel's life. Mary Brooke
    *how precious for your family!!!*

  17. Wow! I would say I'm envious, but that doesn't sound good. Let's just say I am joyful with you as you participate in such an awesome experience (but I'm a tad sorrowful that I can't join in the fun).
