"I Know About That Stuff"

" 'I know about that old diabetes stuff, my granpaw had it wors'n you,' Puny told him with satisfaction. 'And not only can I cook for diabetes, I can cook for high blood pressure, heart trouble, nervous stomach, and constipation.' "

--Jan Karon, At Home in Mitford

(we've only had to go gluten-free for the weekend, while my mother visits after knee replacement surgery)

  2. I think I'm going to be be like Puny one day--with a son who cannot eat either dairy *or* gluten, my culinary skills have been stretched! (But also improved!)

Fortunately, I can still eat as much milk and wheat as my little heart desires.

  3. Wheat AND dairy free at this house due to teen son's allergies and dairy-free due to Dd's issues with it. She was adopted--we tell her that God knew exactly which family to put her with. ;-)

  4. Reminds me of all the diabetes, etc. cookbooks my Grandma used to have. I think they must have been gifts, cause she kept right on eating what she liked, which was mainly sweets and good-old fashioned home-cooked stuff, like cabbage rolls and grilled cheese.

  5. I love her books, I want to also thank your for introducing me to Grace Livingston Hill. I had never read any of her books until I read some of your posts. I was happy to find a shelf full at the Lib. Old dusty most having not been checked out since the early 70's. I happily call it my shelf. Thou I will be sad to leave it behind when we move this summer. Life in the Army, what can you do!
Thank you for sharing a little of your life with us every day. You truely would be on my list of people to want to sit and visit with. :) Not a stalker, :)

  6. It's true that "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" especially in relation to food. for the last week my son has eaten pretty much ham and applesauce. Sad.

  7. Mitford rocks! Some days I wish I lived in a town like Mitford instead of the big city.

  8. This gave me such a smile... I shop and cook for my diabetes, blood pressure, kidney health, lack of colon, tummy soothing, as well as the allergies of the rest of my family and my desire to remain healthily vegan, buy local, and eat organic. *whew* Wonder what it was like in the Garden when there was no disease or food issues? Thanks so much for sharing this!

  9. I loved the Mitford Series. Great book and a great quote.

I'm one of the lucky ones who doesn't have to worry about any allergies to food.

  10. I love the Mitford series. My sister and I took my mom to visit Blowing Rock, NC for a mother's day weekend. Ms. Karon lived in Blowing Rock while writing the books. The church and surrounding gardens are beautiful.

  12. My son was diagnosed with Celiac's two years ago, we are completely gluten free.... it was a tough change for me (a foodie with italian/german immigrant roots :) but the blessing was our health...no more "off the shelf" processed foods and "convenience" or fast food items no matter how tempting. There is always a silver lining.
