A Wool Dress for Clara: Vintage Simplicity 3446
Made up in a lightweight charcoal wool with a beautiful hand, this one will be useful for years. It drapes perfectly on her and is just the ticket for concerts or dressy church.
Beautiful dress. I notice that the pattern is a size 18. Would you mind telling what size in today's sizes Clara is? I have tons of vintage patterns that were my mother's and my aunt's, but I have a difficult time deciding how the sizes translate--the measurements aren't always "right".
Clara and Bella must look like sisters from a catalogue page in these dresses! Any chance we'll get to hear more about Clara's homeschooling project for the year? It sounded so interesting!
I don't actually own this pattern in an 18, mine is a 12. I ignore the number and go by the measurements which are always listed on the outside of the pattern. Vintage patterns, in my experience, run very true to bust, waist, and hip measure. In other words, if you choose the size that matches your measurements, the garment will have just the right amount of ease for you.
Sizes changed from decade to decade.
To fit this patterns for my girls, I added an inch of bodice length for Clara. For Bella, I took out an inch of length in the bodice, and I added half an inch to each shoulder.
Not to mention
ReplyDeletea gorgeous backdrop for a cello
as well.

ReplyDeleteA perfectly lovely dress! And Clara is growing into a lovely young woman as well.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I should keep this in mind for when I want a similar kind of dress...
ReplyDeleteIt's the same pattern as Bella's dress, right?
I'm loving that pattern! It looks beautiful on Clara.
ReplyDeleteClassic and elegant, shades of Audrey Hepburn.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great dress for Clara! It looks really grown up and she looks wonderful in it. She may have found her real style in this.
ReplyDeleteVery elegant and classy ~ love it! I'm so inspired by the feminine, modest, and beautiful dresses you sew ~ great job!
ReplyDeleteThat pattern is just so graceful and elegant without being fussy-- I love it! And I'll confess to fabric envy...

She's the lucky kind of girl who can wear anything and look great...the perfect model figure. Lovely dress.
