A Scrap Quilt for Owen
Just finished a twin-size scrap quilt for one of my very best nephews. He comes to stay every summer for a week or so and this summer we pieced him a quilt. With my sewing machine back in top form I got it quilted last week while babysitting some *other* nephews for two days, boys who go to bed on the early side, leaving me plenty of time to run this thing through the machine over and over and over . . . .
I'm always pleased with how these projects come out. It just seems like you can't go wrong with scraps. For this quilt I didn't stick to quite such a close palette as I often do, and included not just blues and greens, but some bits of brown and even pink and red when they showed up on blue and green backgrounds. It makes things a little busier. Every quilt has its own shtick, you know?
That is great! He must be thrilled.

Anna, it's gorgeous. How I would love to watch while you do the actual quilting. Even for just a few minutes. Um. Do you suppose it would ever be possible to catch a little video? Once, only once in my life have I attempted to maneuver an entire quilt in a sewing machine. Not so good. Would you ever consider giving us a peek? I would love to watch it. Maybe there's hope for me yet? Meanwhile and anyways - congratulations on another gorgeous result.

Your nephews (and neices) are blessed to ave you for an Aunt! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteAnna,
ReplyDeleteI love the style quilting you do, that's up my alley. Merissa decided to try her hand at quilting this summer. She has a different style. You know, the kind where you go out and purchase beautiful fabrics only to cut them up into tiny pieces. :) If you want to see what she did for her first quilt, you can see it here: http://merissa.korsholm.me/2010/08/100-easy-steps.html It's beautiful and all, but I love the idea of scraps. :)

I love it! I'm sure he will too. The colors are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYes, the other colors add a real spark to this quilt!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I used some of the big polka dot fabric in my quilt too. From Hobby Lobby, right? I'm sure your nephew will love his new quilt!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to learn to quilt, but I don't have a machine. Any books you might suggest?
ReplyDeleteMy computer crashed months ago and I lost the bookmark to your blog. Today your blog crossed my mind and I tracked you down (fortunately I had linked to you in one of my blog posts when we copied your Christmas trip idea) ... so glad to have found you again. Your blog truly inspires!
ReplyDeletethat's why I love quilting so much - never matchy matchy and boring to the eye.
ReplyDeleteThis one is so gooooood to look at.
Anna I love your scrap quilts ~ the simplicity of them adds to their beauty.
ReplyDeleteI wondered about your process of piecing. Do cut squares, stack them up and just add the next one from the top or are you more deliberate and intentional than that?
I'd love to know how you go about the process, sometime when you've a moment to post about it.
Ahhhhhhhh, I am so glad you are back! I read you daily during my chemo and surgery recovery, and now you and your family still bless me with a sense of "ahhhhhhhhh" resting in your life and your love for all things honorable and good. HUGS! Retired teacher
ReplyDeleteVery nice, Anna!
