Goodbye to the Big Boys
We had a wonderful, wonderful break together, but the wide world calls. Giles is off to New York again, spending the winter term interning for a commercial photographer whose work he really likes. A change from his summertime in NYC, when he worked for a different company as their all-around photo and graphic design guy. Those folks still like him enough to have hired him for his odd hours coming up, and he'll be earning a little there even while he works his new internship.
Felix scored last week--a thrifted vest that was easily tailored to his personal specs. He's setting the sartorial standard at his school; apparently there's an institution now called "Felix Shirt Friday" where everyone wears a shirt with a collar. Did not see that one coming, as his clothes for several years consisted of rainboots and underwear. He was younger then.
One more semester of high school ahead of him. Can he repeat this term's 4.0? Stay tuned for our next installment of "The Big Boys"!
I know you are proud of these big boys, as you should be! Also v. relieved to know a child with questionable choices in the wardrobing department can still grow up to be civilized!
ReplyDeleteSuch handsome young men!
ReplyDeleteThank you for always putting a smile on my face, and may 2011 bring many smiles to yours!
Just found your blog, it's wonderful! Have a warm, cozy and safe New Year!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Robin
Both your sons are very handsome, and they also seem wonderful people. It's unbelievable how much a photo can tell sometimes, isn't it? I wish them all the best in the coming year. I'm sure they'll make their mother proud!
ReplyDeleteSo, instead of dressing down on Fridays, they're going the other way! I wish them both well.

I bet you're so proud of your boys!:)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear there is hope for their wardrobe as they age ;)

It's such a blessing to have to whole family under one roof, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI wish you all a happy, holy, healthy and safe new year!
For those of us who have followed your blog a long time, it still surprises me to see how grown up the boys are now.
ReplyDeleteAlthough my own homeschool boy is 21 and engaged but I SAW him each week, thus not the same shock.
I had to comment about the new found flair for clothing. Being home schooled, many days my son wore sweats and t-shirts. Now he is into what he calls "the Oxford look".
I must say, your boys are incredibly handsome. I'm an old married lady - who feels even older when their pictures are shown! - but wow. You have a whole beautiful family, the girls are quite lovely as well, I just kinda catch my breath for a minute at pictures of Giles before I remember that I'm not 18 anymore. ;) (And I really hope you read this in the non-creepy way I'm writing it!)
ReplyDeleteHad to laugh out loud at this - I'm glad my house is not the only place where rain boots and undies is the standard uniform! It's amazing how swiftly it seems your boys have transformed into young men. It makes me want to hold on to right now and also look forward to the future at the same time. So glad you're back and posting again!
ReplyDeleteNice they're doing well! Will you update us on Bella and Daisy's schooling at some point? Seems to be the season for academic updates. :)
ReplyDeleteSuch nice young men, I'm sure. And well dressed! Do your boys know The Sartorialist's blog? Great street fashion, especially men. Good photography, too.

I love how teenagers blossom into style mavens. I was a high school teacher before I was a mother, and I never tired of their fashion.
Wow, your boys have grown, especially Giles. He is not looking so much older boy as young man now. Very spiffy! And Felix looks like he would have been a mischievous boy, such a cheeky grin. I look forward to seeing how my 4 young men turn out, hopefully as well as yours.

I had to laugh outloud at your delightful comment about Felix's previous standard for self-dressing! Yes, my son is also grown out of the batman-underoos & cape stage and is now leaving his teen years. That little twist of the heart that steals my breath always catches me off-guard when I realize my son is grown, and doing us proud.
ReplyDeleteRelatively new to your blog, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your archives and watching your wonderful family grow. You are quite blessed!
I enjoy your sewing posts and you have inspired me to actually do something about my love of vintage women's wear and I have purchased a new Vintage Vogue pattern & fabric and am going to make myself a housedress that will help me say good-bye to baggie jeans & t's and say hello to everyday glamour!
You are a blessing to me and have been since the picture with Daisy mopping (2/3/4 years?).
ReplyDeleteThank you.

Ah, bittersweet. I know these days are coming soon enough for me. ::sniff::
ReplyDeleteRainboots and underwear!!! LOL! I have a son like that!
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love Felix's smile! What a merry face he has. :)
ReplyDeleteAt the bottom of this post there is the "You might also like:" posts. If you look at the one called "Goodbye, Hello, Goodbye" there are two things you notice...#1 a year and some facial hair makes a startling difference and #2 Giles is wearing the same shirt. :)
ReplyDelete"felix shirt friday" that's cute. I can imagine the guys calling their collared shirts their "felix shirt". ROFLOL about the rainboots and underwear outfit. All 3 of my kids have been known to be rather "creative" with their choice of clothing at times.
ReplyDeleteGosh - I just love them! I still have 'little' boys, but they are growing quickly :)
