Clara Went Shopping
Clara went shopping this afternoon. She bought sixty-six bright yellow dishes at the thrift store, a new hat, a skein of yarn, and a cup of hot chocolate.
What a find! Those yellow dishes are so charming ~ would brighten up any meal or room year round! Your thrift store sure has some great treasures....or is it that y'all just have an eye for these things? =)
Where is this magical thrift shop? You seem to always be finding the most amazing things! All we have around here is a Goodwill store that is very picked-over and tends to be on the expensive side (believe it or not!). Such beautiful dishes! She has wonderful taste!
She paid $40 for the set, which is about sixty cents a dish, including a teapot, sugar bowl, creamer, butter plate, and gravy boat with its own saucer. It's Lemon Federalist Ironstone, which I think dates from the very early sixties and was sold at Sears.
Indeed you are correct, Anna. My mother and my grandmother both chose that pattern in the 1960s, and I remember as a little girl going with my father to Sears to bring it home for a Christmas surprise!
Dad taped empty wrapping paper rolls and other shapes to the box before covering it in wrapping paper. It looked for all the world like a giant typewriter, and that is what he told Mom it was when she would wiggle to guess the package :)
So many happy meals from sunshine plates.
My grandmother is gone now, and we sold her set in an estate sale not long ago. Wouldn't it be funny if Clara ... ??
Anna, do you have people that call you and say they have something in stock they think you would enjoy? I, too, am impressed by your finds. For the last week I have been to 2 Goodwills in my area for winter clothing and am not able to find much. Any tips?
Love the Lemon Federalist. I got married in 1985 and my every day dishes were the white Federalist. I still have most of my set. I need to replace my sugar bowl that three rowdy boys broke playing in the house and would love to score the tea/coffee/chocolate pot.
She learned from the best! Well done Clara, what a beautiful set of dishes!
ReplyDeleteWow!!! She sure does!! Those dishes are fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteShe was clearly well-trained in this department! :)

ReplyDelete66 bright yellow dishes?! She certainly does know how to shop:)
ReplyDeleteI think Clara and I would get along very well! She found a beautiful teaset - such a happy buttercup yellow!
ReplyDeleteI'd say. She's got impeccable taste. Must've inherited it from her mother :)

Inquiring minds want to know, how much did she spend?
ReplyDeleteLove those dishes! She is destined to be the hostess with the mostest just like her Mama.
Also, do you know about the teenage "haul video" phenom on youtube?
ReplyDeleteLove that Clara has a more sensible version! Go Clara!
Lovely!!!!

Those dishes are simply pretty.
ReplyDeleteWhat company and pattern name are the dishes? Those are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the others--our local thrift shops (all 3 of them in two counties) are overpriced with pathetic choices.

ReplyDeleteWow, Farrah, I wish!!! I do have my best luck at the independent thrift stores--not Goodwill and the other chains.
