Next up in my tour of Southern Cakes is lemoncheese. No, I had not heard of it either. It must belong to a very specific region of the South, apparently suburban Atlanta.
But it should be more widely known. A three-layer yellow cake spread inside, outside, and upside-down with nothing other than homemade lemon curd! Mine was an almost alarming yellow due to Phyllis' free-ranging chickens supplying my eggs.
Tasty!
Is there cheese in it, too?

No. That's what odd. It's just the cake and lemon curd: go figure!
ReplyDeleteWe have lemon curd cake in the UK. So yummy!
ReplyDeleteOh, lemon curd is my favorite! This looks delicious, and the curd is the color it should be because the eggs are the color they should be! :-) I can't bear store-bought eggs any more because they are so anemic-looking (I really want if there is much nutritional value in them), but thankfully I can get eggs from friends and family who keep chickens, too.
ReplyDeleteFruit 'cheeses' are something that you'd find in most books of preserving recipes (certainly ones from the 70s and earlier) here in the UK so perhaps the writer of the recipe had visited Britain recently when she created the recipe?
ReplyDeleteAll right, I think that's going to be my baby's first birthday cake! Love lemon curd.
ReplyDeleteLemon cheese is just another name for lemon curd - or at least, here in England it is. (There is also a delicacy called Damson Cheese mostly made in northern England)
ReplyDeleteHelen
You just had to start this series the very week I join Weight Watcher... ;)
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to make that cake for our birthdays, only her recipe has the lemon curd on top and between the layers, and a seven-minute icing around the outside. I have no idea why it is called cheese cake either!
ReplyDeleteis it sour enough?
ReplyDeleteI'm from Atlanta and the Lemon Cheese is a classic for birthdays and special events. Goes back way before I was born. It was my grandmother's favorite - she was from Newnan, south of Atlanta.
ReplyDeleteI just discovered lemon curd for the first time a few weeks ago. It was amazing! This cake is the perfect next step. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI have lived just outside of Atlanta for 18 years now and have never heard of that! But I see that another poster has, so maybe I am just missing out. Apparently that is the case because I love lemon curd! Going to have to try this!
ReplyDeleteThis was my Grandmother's special cake I remember the most. Her friends made and served it at her funeral luncheon and almost brought me to tears. This was in Northwest Florida.
ReplyDeleteWe always thought it was funny that it had no cheese in it.
oooooh, sounds GOOD. We had homemade lemon curd on raisin scones for breakfast this morning.
ReplyDeleteOh my! That looks SO scrumptious!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE homemade lemon curd.....
ReplyDeleteMmmm! Will definitely have to try this one!

and I was just dreaming about the Filipino lemon curd I made last week. Guess I'll be making some more! The cake looks fabulous. :)
ReplyDeleteI want that cake! Too bad you can't put it in your Etsy shop...
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother lived in South Alabama all her life (think Dothan/Ashford/Enterprise area) and she made the best lemon cheese cake. I didn't appreciate it as a child but boy do I wish I had! I favored the yellow cake with chocolate icing. She always made them in a rectangle cake pan with 3 layers. She always made lemon cheese, yellow with chocolate icing, white on white, and coconut. She was a southern belle to the very core. She died when I was 13 and even though I have all her treasured recipes I can't use them because she wrote them in her own short hand. : )
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother made this kind of cake also. She was from south Georgia. Her recipe was similar, but she always left the grated lemon rind in her lemon "cheese" and her cake was 4 or 5 layers. Great cake and a great memory.
ReplyDeleteAm I missing the recipe here? My dad always talked about his mom's lemon cheese cake. She didnt pass away til I was 16 but I was not a lemon fan so I guess it never appealed to me. Anyway my dad has now since passed away. My mom also says this was a great cake. I would love to make it if you share the recipe. BTW I am from Ga.. about 90 miles south of Atlanta.
ReplyDeleteAmy, I can't copy from the cookbook, because of copyright protection. But any yellow cake layers, and any lemon curd recipe, will get you there. Have fun baking!
ReplyDeleteThis is a South Georgia and East Alabama cake, not a "suburban Atlanta" cake.
