Vintage Gardening Smock: Hollywood 1123

While most people will just shrug their shoulders and turn away uncomprehendingly, I know there is a very specific and tiny segment of the population who will understand my excitement at finding this pattern. I have three words for them: "Coverall and Bonnet."

I just can't resist the purpose-built vintage pattern, whether it's for bowling, gardening, cleaning, or 4H.

This one was extra perfect in being quite graceful, actually, and the perfect use for my not-quite-enough-but-I'll-make-it-work Wedgewood blue polished cotton with a lovely drape. I had envisioned something kimono-like for it, and this pattern fit the bill. I did run out of fabric before trying out the bonnet, though.

Next time!

  1. Polished cotton with a lovely drape - that's almost an oxymoron! The polished cotton I've met was nice, but didn't have much drape. Yours is just beautiful - the blue!

  4. I absolutely love this pattern! Those original vintage ones are so much preferable to the reproduction vintage patterns of today, and the dress itself is just lovely.

    Thanks for sharing!

I tooam always on the lookout for the perfect "working" house dress. Not just an apron, not just a smock, not just a house dress....I believe I have you to thank for this obsession. :)

  9. Count me in as one of the understanding! I have a housecleaning smock pattern that you better believe is going to get made up. Maybe in some 50's faux patchwork fabric.

  11. What a beautiful garment! Anna, I've been so inspired by your sewing with thrifted fabrics. so last night I pulled out my sewing machine & my son's old blue twin sheet. I made myself a pair of drawstring yoga pants. They are great, exactly what I wanted. And free! I never thought of using sheets as fashion fabric, but it works. Next, a kimono style jacket and dress. thanks!

  13. Ebay is a great source for vintage patterns. So is etsy, and then there's my favorite pattern seller, lanetzliving.net. That's where I found this one! Her prices are moderate, service is excellent, and new patterns are posted every day and nicely categorized.
