A Cold Night at the Opera

From a couple of weeks ago--remember when it was cold in Chicago? We went to see Hansel and Gretel. I made the girls new winter dresses for the occasion, all from the Sense and Sensibility 1958 Party Dress pattern. Clara had chocolate brown velveteen on top, brown cotton skirt with a tulle overlay (and she made her own mocha-colored crenoline!). Bella had navy velvet over navy kona cotton. Daisy was turquoise velveteen top to toe.

The performance was wonderful; the stage design not so much. More . . . hmm. A very large rendition of the witch's mouth. Like the Rolling Stones, but larger.

Lovely Clara looking out.

  1. The Rolling Stones, but larger. Sounds singularly unappealing, but what a graphic description, ha! :D

    Dresses, beautiful!!

  2. So lovely. The children always seem underdressed compared to their parents don't they Anna? I smile to see yours in short sleeves whilst you're in your coat and gloves. Mine would be trooping around in T-shirts in the winter whilst I'm layered up with scarf and gloves!

  3. Oooh, such a fun opera! I'm actually singing the role of the Mother right now in my school's production of Hansel and Gretel, and it's tons of fun :)

  4. You all look lovely! The Chicago Lyric Opera used to have regular discounted matinee performances for schools (probably still do?). They chose very kid-friendly performances for those, with the most fanciful, fairy-tale sets. It was such a big treat to get dressed up and go into the city for The Magic Flute, Madame Butterfly, or something similar.

  5. Lilian, it probably wasn't that cold in the building, but I was having an allergy attack so severe I thought I had the flu, and didn't want to take my coat off.

Gillian, have fun and do well!

  6. I love the opera! What a treat! I remember taking my daughter when she was a baby. She sat still and slept the whole time. I must take her again now that shes 15!;) So glad you had a good time. The dresses sound lovely!

  7. so lovely! How do you make a crinoline? Is there a pattern, or just a skirt of tulle? I own 2 crinolines, so I've looked at their construction before.

  8. Oh Anna, those dresses sound divine - and from the glimpses we see here, the girls look so lovely in them. What fun to don pretty dresses and do one's hair for an evening of beauty in music. Hope everyone had a grand time!

  9. How beautiful you all look. My daughter and I went to see Swan Lake before Christmas, we dressed up, but unfortunately not in handmade clothes, and watched the parade, before the ballet started, of other tween daughters with their parents. One looked just like a princess! The ballet was amazing, a night to remember. So glad we made the effort, as I'm sure you were!
