"Not in the Done"

"At the heart of . . . artistic avoidance is the denial of process. We like to focus on having learned a skill or on having made an artwork. This attention to final form ignores the fact that creativity lies not in the done but in doing.
I am writing a screenplay is infinitely more interesting to the soul than I have written a screenplay."

  1. Boy, did you come here as a "fly on the wall" this evening, or what? You looked into my (disorderly) mind.

  2. Oh....I love this. It's in the vein of your post on Little Bites...which inspired me to return to sewing, to enjoy its process, and to not let it die out of my family line.

  4. So true! I love Julia Cameron's book. I gave it to my father last year for Christmas in hopes that it would push him to continuing to write music, too!

  5. I've been following your advice on music with my youngest - this quote inspires me to continue on. He suffered a brain injury at birth, but his creative mind is truly genius (I know, I'm his Mom and biased). Thank you for this.

  6. That is a great quote. I am learning to crochet and I continually wish I were better at it and that all my projects would come out like the pattern pictures! Trying to enjoy 'the process'! Thanks for the reminder..
