The Composer's Big Run

Whew! We all survived the Boston Marathon! It's such a large event that we actually got to see very little of it. We dropped the Composer off in Hopkinton near the start line, then drove to a village train station to ditch the car and take the train into the city's North Station. With the wonderful marathon app, we we got a notification every time the Composer passed a 5k mark. So fun!

Also, Giles had us tracking our fantasy family team--he found runners named Anna, Giles, Felix, Clara, Bella, Tia, etc. and we kept an eye on them also. Clara made very good time.

We had time for a relaxed lunch and a walk all the way across town to the finish line. We had to go through Boston Commons, home of the ducks from Make Way for Ducklings, of course. I thought of Daisy.

By the time the Composer had sweated it out through 40k we had found our way to the finish line to watch. The crowd was five people deep, but folks were agreeable and allowed us right up to the rope to watch him come in.

Which he did with a smile on his face!! That's him below, waving in the white tee. He said he was *very* glad to stop running. It was a hot, sunny, windy day--beautiful for the spectators but hard on the racers.

Some of us got worn out. In fact, we all fell asleep on the train home.

That Boston is hard work!!

  1. Congratulations! Our friend said the conditions were not ideal, but he finished with a smile. My husband has been training intensely for the past 9 months in a last ditch effort to qualify. He has been running for 30 years, but around mile 20 he becomes ill....so runs the final 6 miles while vomitting.....which greatly effects his pace....why he continues to try, I will never understand. He will run his last full marathon on May 1st.....unless God allows him a Biston qualifying time. My guy is 52 years old.

  2. Good for you Composer, I knew you would do well! I am staggered that you can still smile after 40km.

  5. Congratulations to the Composer!
So in awe of those kinds of physical and mental feats!
And I am so glad you got to share it with him, Anna, and with your sweet son and soon-to-be daughter
    Sounds like a perfect time

  6. Well done! It was a beautiful day, but warm in the afternoon! My daughter photographs the ducklings every day on her way to work. I enjoy seeing their varied garb as well as the weather in Boston which can be quite different than the 'burbs.

  11. But the one who exercised the most is not the one who slept on the train - and such a big smile. :) Congratulations to him! I was in Boston today - it was pretty cool (had to eat some gelato anyway), and windy. But so much beautiful architecture in the old buildings and the new.

  12. The Composer looks as fresh as a daisy. I went to Concord straight off a flight from London. I was so excited to be in the USA I forgot to be jet lagged. Next time I'll go to the Alcott home. Not long now as practically my whole family is emigrating to New York this summer.

  13. Congratulations to the Composer! He looks invigorated. I think I'd feel like Giles and Tia. I appreciate how Giles had a fantasy team.
