"It was officially the first day of school so Anna made muffins for breakfast . . . the entire family was gathered . . . Mrs. Ray tall and slim in a starched yellow morning dress, Julia and Betsy in new shirt waists and skirts, Margaret in a new striped gingham with a big striped bow atop her head ."
--Maud Hart Lovelace, Betsy in Spite of Herself
I'm very intrigued by the American terminology........in the British Isles a 'shirt waister' the nearest thing we have, is a type of dress very popular in the 1960s and gingham is always checked, striped gingham would be unknown. Fascinating!
ReplyDeleteI read the Betsy,Tacy and Tib books but not this one. Ill have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteThis is the best way to start the school year, with a nod to our friends, the Rays! We also compliment each other on looking "puny" as we begin again.
ReplyDeleteYour blog brings me joy! ~Crystal
Oh! A Betsy-Tacy quote!!! It was my very favorite series growing up and I remember that tradition that they had of muffins on the first day of school. I have done the same thing with my children. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for a post that made me smile this afternoon :)
Maud Hart Lovelace: lovelovelove! :-) Love the old-fashioned picture her words paint!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder again of these books.
ReplyDeleteCurious question...I know that you write every morning, so when you read a book, is this when you write down these wonderful little quotes and bits of information?
Melissa, they come to me at night when I sit down to write my post, and I think about what the day was about. Then I look through the appropriate book to find them so I can quote them accurately :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your answer, Anna.
