A Forties-Inpired Skirt
More sewing! My inspiration for this skirt was the bustle-back skirts of the late 1940's. I took a plain side-zipping, A-line skirt pattern and cut it out one size larger than I needed. Then I cut out a waistband to fit my waist exactly. When I pinned the skirt pieces to the waistband, I brought all the extra fabric around to the center back, and folded it into a box pleat. I like to think that it lends a gracefully-draping fullness to the back of the skirt, while keeping the front nice and fitted.
For fabric I used a gorgeous length of wool flannel that I bought on my first trip ever to Denver Fabrics--it only took me a year and half to work up the courage to cut into it!

I wear quite a few skirts based on this sort of pattern. It is quite flattering. :) Good work!
Anna,
That is beautiful! I enjoy reading your blog!
Thanks,
Deana
That's a really cute skirt. I had made a couple similar to that a few years ago, except they went down to my ankles and they just tied closed in the back. Yours looks much better and more finished than mine did.
What a beautiful skirt! And the fabric looks absolutely lovely.
Wow! I love it! You are very brave to cut something out without an exact pattern.
Isn't Denver Fabrics wonderful? I bought a whole roll of fabric there a few weeks ago for less than $3 a yard.
Beautiful skirt Anna.
Probably the most favoritest thing I ever made, I made from charcoal gray wool flannel. I remember holding my breath as I cut into it.
This is a beautiful skirt!
That is lovely. :) I also like your donut robe.
I love, love, love this skirt! Your books are great too, by the way!
Emma
