Influential Reading

The ten books which have influenced me the most in the last five years:

Romans (The Bible). An intellectual framework for my faith.

The Surrendered Wife (Laura Doyle). Stop trying to boss your husband and become much happier.

Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers (Gordon Neufeld). Offers a convincing, credible, and *useable* way to think about your child's need to bond, and explains how to harness it in the service of good parenting. Especially helpful and insightful for older children and teens.

A Framework for Understanding Poverty (Ruby Payne). Key to working with generational poverty in juvenile court.

The Artist's Way (Julia Cameron). Stop angsting about it already and do something creative!

Sink Reflections (Marla Cilley). After fifteen years of marriage I still didn't have it figured out, but Marla finally taught me how to run my home in a orderly way.

Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House (Cheryl Mendelson). Once I figured out that I could run my house, this book told me how to clean.

Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think (Brian Wansink). Identify your external cues to eat, change them if you want--a little awareness goes a long way towards determining how much you consume.

Vintage Style (Cath Kidston). Beautiful photography, beautiful vintage aesthetic. Inspired me to sew.

The Bombshell Manual of Style (Laren Stover). A tongue-in-cheek look at old school glamor.

I've never given much thought to my own most influential reads. . . good conversation to have with my husband this evening after the kids are down to sleep.

We've been going (s-l-o-w-l-y) through Romans at church. And it has been great, but I think I'd put the more practical James on my list instead. Both books have set my faith on fire, but James really confronted my human hypocritical nature.

So many books, so little time!

thanks for the list, I wrote several down that I want to read. Do you have any suggestions on books for homeschool. Not, textbooks, but more like a "how to" kind of thing...my daughter is only a year and a half, but we are seriously considering homeschooling her when the time comes necessary and wanted to start researching it since I did not come from a home-school family and feel unsure about how to go about it.

Thanks Anna!!!!

PS I loved the elephants, but didn't sign up to enter the drawing since you had been so kind to me last time. I wanted to give someone else a chance.

Blessings,
Lacey (husband who is deployed)

I was shocked to see Ruby Payne on your list! My husband just completed his doctoral research on her work in schools.

Reading her work has been enlightening as we discuss our family's money choices and as we reach out to others.

Just tonight we finished a study of Romans...and "wow", I agree.

Thanks for listing your favorite housekeeping books. I need some help in that area and feel inspired by your comments on that subject in your blog, too.

I have owned a Bombshell Manual of Style ever since reading a review in a mag when it came out. Whether or not you actually want to be a bombshell or fantasize, such a good book for anyone with a feminine, sensitive side.

The librarian will have to bear with me again (their expressions change to "tried librarian face" when we walk in because we have over 60 items out between the 5 of us. te he). I will be getting these books when I am done with my 15 items. ;-)

Anna, this book list sounds awesome. I think the one that looks the most interesting to me is "The Surrendered Wife" but they all look like good reads.

I just started reading "Beautiful in God's Eyes" the treasure of the Proverbs 31 Woman by Elizabeth george.

Thank you Anna for sharing with us.

Your elephants are sweet, by the way.

We've been studying Romans in my BSF class this year. I just joined and although I've studied Romans before, this is eye opening! Thanks for listing it as a favorite.

My husband likes "Art and Fear." Same concept. It's fun to see your list. Your ethic is inspiring, and I liked to see your influences. :)

Isn't The Bombshell's Guide fun?

"Art and Fear" is a favorite of mine as well. What is your husband's area of creativity?

Hi, Composer. My husband is an artist of the drawing and graphic art persuasion.
