Learning to Grocery Shop

It's Bella's turn to learn to shop. She was born with the right instincts--for years her allowance was spent on macaroni and cheese in the box. But now she's doing the real thing. Unit pricing, reading labels for dairy, checking sizes and expiration dates: there's a lot to think about.

My grocery shopping crew these days is Bella at my side, getting it done, and Felix off somewhere else in the store with Daisy in a red racecar trolley. They have their own agenda--first a deli stop for a free cookie, some cruising up and down aisles with a lot of talk about crazy driving, a visit to the florist for a free balloon, and then the dairy case to select just the right tiny box of chocolate milk for Daisy's lunch on grocery day.

How did I ever get it done without help?

If you remember, share your secret--I have three little ones under 6, with two of them 2 and under, and grocery shopping with all three makes me think hard about perpetual fasting. :)

Lovey outing...shopping with your children...mine are grown and those days are over but I have sweet memories...Friday night was grocery night for us..it was a family affair...I had to chuckle...now when we visit our local Kroger's my husband makes a beeline for a cookie from the deli...he's just a big kid at heart.

I am awaiting the day (not so patiently) that I can have help like that. My two, newly four and one, still manage to squeeze in said car carts-but not without a share of bickering. I make them sandwiches to eat while we are there in hopes that a full mouth might keep said bickering at bay. But-to coupon?!? Hardly a possibility!

Awww, how sweet! I love helping my mom shop too...(although she's not been taking me along recently, because I always load up the cart with stuff not on the list, Mac&Cheese, cereal, yogurt, ice-cream, waffles, etc. etc. etc)

I remember those days ~ fondly actually. Now my daughter is in college (local), drives, and calls me on the cell while out and about asking if I need anything at the store. Absolute luxury. :oD

Your day will come ~ and all the memories of shopping 'challenges' will be precious held to your heart.

Our kids are learning to shop as well. Right now, I'm trying to teach my 16 year old girl and my 12 year old son to menu plan. They plan one day a week and really enjoy it. I hope the novelty won't wear off for them any time soon. It makes my life easier. :) Blessings!

These are the things I think you sometimes miss out on learning when you go to a "conventional" school. Being homeschooled, I learned how to manage money, cook/bake, can food, sew, and manage a home. Many of my friends were envious of the headstart I received, as they were learning all these things after they were married. I am sure your daughters (and sons!) will really appreciate this once they set up their own homes.
