Felix Built a Feeder
It's been a year since we had a working feeder up (odd considering all the bird love around here), so I asked Felix to built one for me and he happily did, out of scraps from the cabinetry shop across the street. I put it in the backyard, just off the kitchen porch, in an area which has been remarkably beautiful, cosy, and private this year. My favorite part of the garden.
Other years I've kept a giant bag of birdseed down in the mudroom, out of sight and mind, to find it forgotten and moth-infested, after noticing empty and abandoned feeders. This time, though, I thought to keep it close at hand (in a vintage bread box, no less) in small quantities, where I will remember to check on the seed supply every day.
So far it's working--my little pile of sunflower seeds has attracted titmice, chickadees, and nuthatches, and I'm hoping that the word will soon spread to the cardinals.

Likewise, my giant sack of seed is in the garage where it is of absolutely no use at all to the hopeful birds inspecting the empty feeders and flying away disappointed. But when I left a lidded bucket nearer to the feeders a determined squirrel gnawed a hole in it and gorged on the lot.
I love birds too and hardly do what it takes to keep them around more by feeding them regularly. How nice of your son to build you a feeder too.:)
We keep our little yellow finches and the hummingbirds fed around here. Then I put Morning Song in the other two feeders. I love listening to their singing in the morning. That birdie grapevine moves pretty fast.
I so need to do this, too. I love birds and the boys and I would have so much fun watching them. Thanks for the inspiration!
How exciting...nearly all of our local birds are gone south already for the winter....so our feeder stand lonely outside the living room window
A lovely feeder and a great idea! I'm always forgetting about refilling my feeders--and I am currently looking for the *new* bag of feed that has somehow gone missing:)
Where I live, the sunflower seeds would attract rosellas, pink galas and then those would be chased away by horribly obnoxious cockatoos.
We don't want to encourage the cockies to come and visit. They're very destructive.
Best wishes in attracting all the right birds! They'll enjoy a good meal at your place.

I think all of the cardinals are over here at my house -- along with a few finches, it's all cardinals at my feeders! Maybe we could arrange a swap?
