Felted Rocks
It's a little bit of a stretch to call this a sewing project, although I found it in Last-Minute Fabric Gifts by Cynthia Treen. Perhaps there should be a separate book for last minute gifts to wrap in roving, drop into an old stocking, and scrub in the sink? Because that is what I did.
I just love how these look and feel, and plan to give them as paperweights to someone who owns the land the rocks came from. Hope he's not reading here.

What a novel idea! :~}
Beautiful colors. My Favorites.
Those just beg to be experienced by exploring hands. My son, a very tactile-feel-y sort of child, would love those. The colors are alluring too.
My freshman year in design school, we were assigned a project called "feelies". Each student was given a block of wood, same dimensions, to turn into a sculptural object that would entice the observer to pick it up and manipulate it. (Of course, this was three-fold: to practice design, to understand our materials, and to learn how to use the wood shop at our disposal.)
I long for a resourceful, homemade Christmas.
How strange! They look like the eggs of some mysterious creature. I hope he'll appreciate them.
What a great idea. This is something I could help the grand kids make for gift giving this year. Thanks!!
gorgeous colors ! i think i would put them on the table along with matching candles. they look good just as is !
When I saw the makeup bags you made from Cynthia Treen's book I went and checked it out at the library. Now I've renewed it so many times I feel like it's mine! Thanks for the great ideas! I have enjoyed making the makeup bags for Christmas gifts and other neat things from her book. I will probably not make felted rocks but maybe the knowledge that they exist will come in handy in the future.
I've seen these in a few places and wondered how they were made. Using them as paperweights is such a great idea.
