Cutest Cotton Housedress: Vintage McCall 1603

So the Composer says my sleeves look like they're extruding index cards, but I don't care! I think I'm cute! These sleeves are crazy--the fronts and backs are separate pieces joined until they get to the cuffy thing. Non-functioning buttons.

But can we talk about the yoke? Because that gets five stars. I did it in plaid, but I love the embroidery transfers included in the pattern. And the piped collar!

The green fabric is a great-condition cotton percale bedsheet from the fifties!

This is adorable! I think your sleeves are cute, too. Hopefully your Composer doesn't mind too much!

You are just too cute, Anna! I enjoy following you on your quest for the perfect housedress. I continue to be amazed at the amount of *work* you accomplish in a day (sewing, cooking, homeschooling, cleaning). I struggle as a homeschooling mom to find time to fit everything in. You inspire me to keep pursuing creative endeavors that bring life to me and to my family. Thanks for sharing your beauty!

The Composer & my husband have a lot in common. My engineer would have said the same thing--or at least something very similar. But I've already been ordered not to wear my favorite housedress in his presence. So I have to use it during daylight hours and then modernize myself as evening falls.

your color combinations are sweet!

Cute!! LOL! I had to laugh about the "snarky" comment your dh lent you about the sleeves...I know mine would be joking with me too...

Index cards are the best -- very useful.

I am surprised you do not own....that I know of....a vintage Singer machine. Talk about getting in touch with the 50's! I have quite a few and they sew like a dream. They don't make em like they used to. I enjoy your blog.

I just want to add that in no way do you look almost 40 years old!

OH Anna!

How adorable you look! YOu are such a talented seamstress and I love the patterns and fabrics that you use. My honey probably would have made the same comment, boys!

Have a blessed day!

That is so cute! I'm jealous! The index card comment sounds like something my hubby would say.

You DO look cute! Though I have to admit, I can see the Composer's point as well... I love the plaid with the green - very perky!

Oh, Anna that is the one of the absolute cutest dresses I've ever seen! This is a new favorite.
You did a tremendous job on that-so cheerful. Anyone would feel happy in that dress. Love it.

Love it. Your cute figure is perfect in these adorable 50s dresses, Anna! And I agree: an embroidered yoke is just called for, which means you have to make another of these sweet little confections!

Cute is right! Besides, you never know when you might need an index card! :) What a great idea to use a sheet, and what a cute housedress with the plaid. Love the ample pocket too!
