In Which We Wear Hats, Boots, Skis, and Skates

The Composer always wears his serious boots for these big winter trips. It's how he manages to haul all of us, and all our suitcases, over the snowy roads and through all the airports and up into the mountains in a strange car. Do not get in front of these boots.

Because he is excited about being right here: at the top of a ski run. That's okay, you go on without me. Daisy and I will stay at the bottom of the mountain and tube down this little hill. All morning.

Oh, ice skating! First time for the girls. I insisted that they stay far away from me if even one of us was moving. The winter sports are all about the controlled fall, I realized this year.

You will often find Daisy thinking about cocoa. Cocoa came after ice skating.

Snowy fun, but we missed the boys--Felix especially loves to ski, but they couldn't get away from school this year. We've spent the last couple of years adjusting to the fact that we have to plan fun even though we can't all be together for everything.

The big girls are together these days. Love their coordinated berets--my mother knit those out of cotton, and they made stylish travel gear.

Mmm. She's cute on a plane.

So good to be back!

Charity and I missed you! Glad you are safely home. With our world rocked by the quake in Haiti, it's good to have you giving us our sanity break again.

God bless!

It looks like a fantastic holiday. I know the feeling of doing things with the whole family not being together. It takes adjusting to but is still fun and essential.

Kind regards,
Sonya

Love the girls' berets! Perhaps your Mum would provide pattern maker and title? Glad to see you all had a fun time.

Ah, that looks like a lovely holiday, even if you missed those big boys of yours. Wow, is skating hard? We have a rink near us (not quite as lovely as an frozen lake but still...) and I keep putting off going as I can only imagine spending money to get sore, cold and damp!

I, too, have had to learn to adjust my expectations with the changing and growing and moving of our family...and plan for those who are here rather than sulk about those who are not.

It really is all about the controlled fall. I ski well, and *thought* I was good ice skater. Until a fast-moving young boy ran into me from behind, I had a very NON-controlled fall, and I broke my wrist. Even in my skinny college days, all my weight on one tiny wrist was too much.

Winter sports are still so, so fun, though! Welcome home!

So glad you are all home safe and sound. The pictures are wonderful. It is so good to be able to have fun family times. I know you miss the boys. Oh that things could stay the same - well for just a little while anyway. It is also good to see them grow into the people the Father intends them to be.

Looks like you had a great time in a beautiful place!

I would love to know where you bought those pretty quilted jackets (if it was recently) - I've been searching for something just like those!

Sweet times, Anna. It is hard to adjust to the family growing up and not everyone available to go away...but so important for those still in the home! Love the Land's End jackets and the pretty beret's your mother made for the girls!

Glad you are back Anna! What a lovely vacation. Meanwhile, I kept warm with your soup recipes and kept your family in my prayers!

I'd love to be in the Rockies again. We're making do with the western Sierra Nevadas for now, but hopefully one day our road trips will take us back there.

Looks like you all had a great time. When I saw the boots picture, I thought someone had tied his shoelaces together from the red stripe on the carpet!
Those knit berets are too cute.

I loved the ice skating pictures. I grew up in Alaska and at school we had ice skating during recess. We were also fortunate to live by a lake and spent many hours skating. Ice skating has many good memories for me. The littlest ones would push a backwards chair infront of them as they learned to skate. Glad to see you enjoyed your trip!

Just wondering... why did Felix go to boarding school? Would you recommend this course? Sounds like he is enjoying it :)
