Strawberry Travel Bag

I picked up the perfect beaded strawberries to show off the little travel bag I stitched from Heather Ross's Weekend Sewing, a book I can recommend only for its beautiful styling (trusting seamstresses will find themselves betrayed by its error-ridden instructions).

I had been wanting to make a bag with a shaped, zipped top and this one fit the bill. Interestingly, instead of constructing an exterior and a lining and then joining them, each panel is constructed as a self-contained unit, and then they are joined together and the seam joints are visible (though finished) on the inside. I was somewhat dubious about this method, but realized at the end that it does add extra structure to the bag.

Ha! Charity (14) tried to make the wrap skirt from that book and had all sorts of grief! She finally went to the author's website and found some corrections--but felt that even the corrections were still in error on some points. She did finally get the skirt done when she and I finally put our heads together and just used our common sense. So did you find errors in the zippered bag, because that was one we were thinking about trying as well. And oh, I DO love the strawberry fabric so much!! That bag is very "me".

That's a pity that the book had so many errors. Very odd to...do you know if it was self-published or not? Because if it was self-published, it's possible she didn't have an editor or someone to look over it. But still...

I love "weekend sewing"!! I just discovered this book while out with my husband and son and it has inspired me to learn how to sew! I love that she even has recipes thrown in there to sit and sew next to!

I have Weekend Sewing and have followed some of the sewing blogs where the mistakes are mentioned, but with a move in the Spring I've not tried a single pattern. This little bag may be my first! So very concise, I like that.

It really is so good for you to be back.

I'm so glad you're back! And I'm glad I'm not the only one with Weekend Sewing trouble. I made the bag with the pleated top and found a rather large mistake in the instructions.
