What I Did on (What Turned Out to Be) My Summer Vacation

Clara and Felix spent a month in Costa Rica studying Spanish and came back well on their way to fluency. Now Clara's enrolled at the local university in an upper-level Spanish class which will give her 16 hours of credit if she gets at least a C. Go Clara!

Giles spent his two months in New York and learned his way around backward and forward. When I went to visit he took me *everywhere* I wanted to go (hello M & J Trimming! My, that's a lot of velvet ribbon! Hello Purl! Clara sends her love!) And then he took me sailing on the Hudson River. Yes, wow.

We had many many people in and out of our home all summer. A Middle Eastern student with a complicated dental situation stayed with us for a month. Children between homes. Teens whose single parents had to travel. Sad children getting happier.

We kept on running in dreadful heat and humidity. It's like poor man's altitude training. When fall gets here, we are going to be so in shape. Who needs Kenya?

And now, here's to a new season of bearing fruit!

Months ago, my husband and I had some bad news. It had been a long time of bad news even before that. I went to your blog for a breath of fresh air, and was saddened to see the end of your posts. "Not that, too!" I said. A friend was looking for homeschooling advice yesterday, and I came to your blog to look for that old Homeschool Heresies post you had made to send her, and my heart leaped to see a pile of new posts. A Happy Thing! Thank you. Your blog has often encouraged me in mothering, in homeschooling, in housekeeping, and in hoping. I'm so glad you came back.

Dear Anna,

Sorry for writing on such an old post but since I see you have comment moderation I guess it shouldn't get lost in the shuffle. I read this entry when it first popped up in my Bloglines and was so thrilled to find you writing again. Literally just a day or two before your blog had flitted across my mind and I had thought how much I miss the little glimpses of loveliness you give. I especially appreciate them because of how crowded my day generally is -- much more than I would like it to be. Hence why it has taken me so long to comment. Your posts with their gorgeous pictures tend to be like mini vacations for me. Part of the reason I had to leave my comment on this specific post is that you mention "Who needs Kenya?" You obviously are doing just fine without, but since I actually live in Kenya, I do have to say it's not too bad of a place -- in my opinion you can't beat the weather -- and maybe someday you can come and do some running here! Thanks again for helping us see more of the beauty in the world.

Natalie_S said...

You're back! I can't believe I missed it!

You cannot believe how much I have missed your gentle inspiration to keep creating beauty. I feel like I've failed miserably the past few weeks, but I'm going to keep getting after it.
