Bed by Bed

It's time for all, *all* the bedding to get washed, to satisfy the housekeeper in me and to help the allergy sufferers in the house. I'm doing just one a week, though, as more would be madness.

In age order, each child is stripping absolutely everything off the bed. Mattress pad, sheets of course, all blankets, quilts, duvets, pillows, everything. It takes about all day to get everything washed and tumbled dry, but it feels so good to get it done.

I did not know that Bella slept under three quilts, two afghans, and four pillows. Hers took more than a day.

bella sounds like me! I slept under a mountain of covers when I was younger, too! It was so comforting. And....warm.

That would be me, with the three quilts. ;)

Sounds wonderful Anna!

I tend to do these things piecemeal, but it's more satisfying to get it all done in one clump.

Oh, this feels good!! There's nothing like holding the picture in your head of a perfectly clean bed, top to bottom, and your child peacefully asleep in it! Sweet!

My (25 year old) son does that. He said it's not as much about the warmth as the weight of the blankets. Having the heaviness on him helps him to relax and feel secure as he's falling asleep and helps to calm his mind. It works, so I don't question it!

I am in this process too Anna. I love all the fresh bedding and January is a good month to get it done. My youngest was so thrilled with his lovely smelling comforter/quilt.

How do YOU clean the actual pillow (not pillow slip)? I have washed them...result: lumpy mess ... frozen them outside without washing (we live in New England) ... Tossed and bought new: not frugal.

No option satisfactory, though.

curious as to your method,

We won't do this until spring, when it's breezy and sunny enough to dry outside. I adore the scent of line-dried bedding. Right now my sheets are in the dryer because it's snowing outside.

And I, like Bella, adore a heavy, heavy layer over me in bed. Manufacturers seem obsessed with making winter clothes and blankets more and more lightweight and I don't understand!

My husband and I enjoy sleeping under a down comforter. Our 15 y.o. daughter loves a quilt, down comforter, blanket, and afghan. She loves the heaviness of it.
We've been doing cleaning up here, too. It feels fresh for the new year!

There is nothing like crawling into a wonderfully clean and fresh bed - I think of it as a little gift to give the family each week! Like you I take such satisfaction in fresh linens.
We wash all of the sheets and pillow slips on the beds each Saturday morning and the pillows on the first Saturday of the month - it really helps the allergies as you mentioned. I use the dryer when I can't hang them out on the lines, but when early spring comes and everything can be dried outside once again, every comforter, duvet cover, pillow, quilt, and blanket gets a hot water washing and hours of fresh air and sunshine! I do the same thing in fall - mid October if our sunny days are holding out, and of course, after any illness. I love it when there are no insects or spiders about outdoors and I can hang the wash out overnight - such an amazingly clean fresh smell. No candle or room spray can duplicate it!

Oh my dear! I think Bella and my oldest Dd (15 next month) are sisters or something!!! The mountain of covers on my daughter's bed is stupendous at times. ;-)

I think crawling into a bed all freshly made up with clean *everything* is such a simple pleasure.
