A Cleaning Day and a Crib Quilt

I got lucky this morning: the house needed quite a bit of work and all four of my children were free. No one was rehearsing, or painting a deck, or getting a haircut. So we started at ten sharp to power down my housecleaning list and I was astonished at how much we got accomplished in an hour.

I started dreaming big with my list, passing by it on the table and casually adding more and more far-fetched chores to the bottom of it, until everything that had been nagging at me was included. And they all got done.

Some mothers see their workload go down as their children leave home. I don't see how this can be. When all the kids are gone, I'll have to do everything myself!

And I've got another crib quilt in the shop. I did a lot of piecing last month and my mother is catching up on the quilting--that's how they appear so rapidly, in case you wonder. This one was reminding me of a big bowl of cut-up peaches, maybe with a little cream and sugar . . . .

Oh, you are living the dream!! I've got a four year old who loves to create (that's messy) and a one-year old who loves to destroy (that's messier) and a dog who sheds (that can be messy) and most days I feel like I have been working nonstop and picking up after people and wiping things down and yet....it's just still not clean to my (admittedly high, probably too-high for this season of life) standards!! My four year old is learning tricks though--he can tidy up, clear the table, put away toys, help wash windows, etc. So maybe by the time he's a teenager we can have a big cleaning list and get through it in AN HOUR! My mind reels at the thought!

Polly, you're upside is that you can still fit them in your lap, lucky girl!

Oh, I so agree with your observation about household chores! I dread the day when I must do it all myself!

At our home we divide the house into "zones" and everyone is responsible for cleaing one zone. When our oldest got married, I took on the cleaning of two zones. I'm ramping myself up for eventually cleaning without my fabulous helpers. More than the willing hands, I will miss the comraderie.

I *was* wondering how the quilts have been appearing so fast - thanks for explaining.

I have two out of the nest and one still at home who helps me out tremendously! Our solution (hopefully) to that is downsize to something more manageable for our "advanced age" once she's flown the nest, too. :o)
I agree with you, Anna, I miss those sweet days of my babies....

oooh, I would love to turn my cleaning list over to teenagers! With that in mind, I keep teaching my children more and more cleaning tasks. This summer we're going to work especially hard at it.

I would love to see your quilts full-size to get the full picture, Anna. They are so pretty.

I clean my bathroom to make it worthy to bathe my newborn in. Slowly, my other children are "getting it." You are blessed, that is for sure!

That is so true. I was reminded of it last night when I rocked my little girl to sleep after a full, messy day. Her sleepy sweetness...I love it!

The quilt is beautiful.. I agree ...reminds me of peaches too.Yummy!!
Oh, I soooooooooo agree. Our children at home are wonderful!! When my children were young, the girls I worked with at the hospital, always complained when school was out..Not me.. such a pleasure for them to be home. And we accomplished so much together and then we could play.fun.. Now , they are grown and gone, I miss them so much.. And all the help they gave me.

Does that 4 include Giles, or is he officially off the roster and Fully Adult?

I take it Felix is home for the summer? My oldest two are in AZ visiting their grandparents so I've spent the last week spring cleaning myself.

I wish it did include Giles! He's a little far away to be helping with my cleaning though.

Felix is home for the first half of the summer, and we're enjoying him while we've got him.

With our three daughters married and with families of their own, I'm already feeling what you're anticipating. I miss my "minions"! Our youngest just left the nest last August.....I think I'm still adjusting.
God is good....ALL the time!
