A Spring Full of Orchids
My orchids are having a great spring--four of them are in full bloom, a bloom that's been on the horizon for months now, and a second set is a few weeks behind.
It's been a good week to get things done--Daisy finished school, my writing class is over, and no one went on a trip. I made some long-overdue tablecloths for the church, fixed a rug, organized the foster parent's closet at the church (a big mess, and my responsibility), and made a bazillion phone calls.

I'm always surprised at how well my orchids do when I completely neglect them for weeks at a time.
They're the perfect plant for me. I have 5 now and the big plants are all flowering and the small one (that apparently dislikes care more than the others) finally has some buds, too. No water for three weeks and then a big dump of water apparently did that :-D
What kind of fabric did you use for the tablecloths?

I've just gotten into orchids recently. My first one is blooming again after a brief rest. It's beautiful! It was $5.00 on clearance in Stop & Shop. I just got a mini for $3.00I have no idea what its" hue is though. I am hoping to eventually get a white one, my favorite! Anna, have you had to repot any yet? How do you know when it its time? How are they propagated? I'd love to share them with my family. Logee's sells the vanilla orchid. I've been coveting it for a few years. Wouldn't it ber fun to grow your own vanilla beans?
How amazing that your church has a foster parents closet! Love!
Lisa, they're all twill from Hobby Lobby. I did three big ones.
Anonymous, I've repotted when the pot looks too full--and they propagate themselves at my house by growing a baby plant at the top of the flower stalk. I cut that off and plant it.
Only a bazillion Anna? What did you do in your spare time. :)
Quite seriously this word made me smile, maths is my weak point and I've been trying to get my head around 'terabyte' recently. I think bazillion will do nicely.
Do you have a website or book that you use for the orchids? I've watered mine only 3 times this whole year , and it's beginning to bloom! The leaves look very sad and droopy, though. Would love to have it happy! I just have no idea how to do it.
I water mine every ten days, all year. I quit feeding them a couple of years ago and they don't seem to miss it. I don't understand! Oh well.
Watering 3x a year does not sound like enough!! I'd step that up a little.
There are lots of online resources that can give you detailed instructions for your orchids.
Thanks Anna for the information about propagating orchids. I didn't know that they grow the baby plants at the end of the flower stalk. That's going to be interesting to watch! I would never have tried orchids if it weren't for your orchid posts! I expected them to be too difficult for me. They are actually really easy, at least the supermarket variety ones are. Now to conquer African violets. I have absolutely no luck with those.

I'm glad you were able to have some "down time". ;)
