A Heartbreaking Day with Fitzwilliam

Yesterday was tick-and-flea medicine day for the cats. This morning Fitzwilliam was deathly ill and neurologically impaired. We had him at the vet's office by 8:30 a.m., terrified that he was going to die in the car on the way to town. My darling cat. I love him more than any other animal.

I had been using up a box of Advantage that a friend had passed on to me, and she had accidentally included a tube of medicine for *large dogs*. Yes, I had poisoned FW. My heart breaks.

The vet scrubbed him down immediately, sedated him, and has had him on IV fluids all day. Our internet research indicates that at least 24-48 hours of treatment is necessary before real improvement happens. I hope, hope, and pray that this wonderful cat will fully recover--and forgive me.

Oh Anna,
Pets are so much more than pets, they are family.
We are praying and hoping Fitzwilliam will be heal quickly.
We lost our little dog for 2 days in snowy weather and I just couldn't stop crying, thinking she was cold and hungry. She was found and returned. I know how you are feeling.
Praying for you, Anna.

Oh NO! I will pray for him!! Poor Fitzwilliam!!

I have had to be so careful about this as well, because we sometimes use a flea and tick medication that is poisonous to cats on our large dog (simply because it is the only one that works on him--bummer). When we give it to him, we keep them entirely apart for several days--not hard to do, as they dwell in different regions of the family estate here--and I am always double-checking the cat meds to be sure I'm getting the right one. Scary!

I will pray that Fitzwilliam recovers completely. And that you do, too.

Since he appeared on your blog, your Fitzwilliam has reminded me of my own sweet Batman. Batman was tenacious, tough, and managed to recover from quite a few scary situations with astonishing speed. Fitzwilliam is a big, strong cat. He's getting the best care, and he got it quickly. With any luck, you'll get a phone call tomorrow from a happy vet, letting you know that he can come home earlier than expected.

In the meanwhile, please try to forgive yourself.

Oh Anna, how terrifying! And how very easy for such a thing to happen.

Fitzwilliam has on his side his robust health and constitution and the prayers and thoughts of us all, as do you.

Oh, Anna! :( Hoping for his full recovery. My mother recently realized that she was poisoning her beagle with treats made in China. Liver disease. He nearly died as well, but has recovered. There is hope for Fitzwilliam! Cling to that.

I am so sorry to hear....we had a similar experience some time ago with one of our cats and I will NEVER EVER use that poison on any of our felines. Please, please keep us posted as soon as you know more. Praying!
