My Knitted Short Stays

I knitted this crazy--but in an alluring way--garment from Jane Austen Knits, maybe the Fall 2013 issue? It's patterned after the short stays worn under dresses, for support.

As an outer, knitted garment, it's something completely different--an abbreviated but cozy vest.

Let's talk about the fact that the ribbing is deliberately off-center in the back. It kind of freaks me out.

Also, I maybe should have knitted a swatch. But it is cozy and fun!

That's fun!I've actually experimented with making the sort of garment this is based on... it works pretty much like a bra, as opposed to the longer stays. I also started making a similar outer garment - so it's fun to see it done in knit! There were sleeveless spencers / bodices, so maybe the knit version is not such a stretch after all...

Are you saying you should have knitted a swatch to make sure of the fit? It looks like a nice fit to me. It's cute.

It's lovely, Anna! Although the off center ribbing would disturb me as well. What were the designers thinking?

Anna, you know I think the world of you...at least I hope you know that. But, I have to tell you...that looks like a bra. If I were you, I don't think I'd wear it anywhere. 😉

Holly, I think I will agree with you. In the house wear. I'm going to play around with the design in jersey though and see what it looks like expanded.

Ooh, I may interpret the ribbing in jersey as hand-stitched pin tucks!!

This is very sweet.
Anna I think I would try this again and simply widen the triangles so that they criss-cross higher in front - (sort of the same look as those shawlettes that cross in the back and tie in front)
But this is pretty and looks great with the jersey dress!

I saw a someone wearing something almost exactly like this a couple weeks ago....but the ties were wider and wrapped around her at least once (maybe twice?) and tied on the side. I thought it was really pretty! And again you've posted something on your blog that makes me wish I could knit! :)
