Winter 1973

My family moved into this schoolhouse when I was four years old--before that we lived around on the other side of the mountain in what we still call "the blue house" even though it's now covered in rockwork. This picture is from those Blue House years--my brother Matt, and my father, and our dog Caleb, and me, in a rare snowfall. I'm sure we had no power and the pipes were frozen, but that didn't bother us as children!

  5. So you grew up in the schoolhouse? And now you're raising your family there? I sense a story and I'd love to hear it....

  8. Well, there's not much to the story! My parents bought and renovated the schoolhouse in 1974 and we moved in. I lived there until I went to college, then came back for a semester before law school started. In that semester I met and married the Composer, and we set up housekeeping in the city, where we stayed for five years. At the end of five years, we were crowding ourselves out of our little post-war city house, and wanted something bigger and in the country. My parents, on the other hand, decided to move to the city. We bought the schoolhouse! and haven't looked back since--it's been twelve years this Christmas.
