Now that the heat has settled in I'm diverting my dessert energies to homemade ice cream. I do so love the little countertop unit.
Lavender and honey ice cream shown above. Before lunch I steeped two tablespoons of lavender blossoms in heavy cream, light cream, honey, and a pinch of salt. Strained it into a jar and chilled it. Later in the day I froze it, then put it in the freezer to ripen.
The jury might still be out on this one. I know for a fact you're not going to want a whole big bowlful. But a few spoons? Yes.
Hi Anna,
ReplyDeleteCan you tell us what brand of ice cream maker you use? I have been looking to buy one after seeing all the yummy treats you make in yours.

Funny-- we bought lavender-infused honey at the farmers market a few weeks ago & last night my husband decided to try it on a slice of wheat bread. "not a fan," quoth he. To me the jury is still out, too. No to bread, maybe to biscuits, and yes sometimes to Earl grey tea. The honey is very lavender-y!!
ReplyDeleteSound like it would be lovely served in little tea cups with short bread cookies. I think I will try this as I do love lavender. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds pretty nice.

Alyssa, I have a Cuisinart.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was a fan of lavender-infused things, but I'm not. Or flower flavors either (soooo disappointed to discover Turkish delight is flavored with rosewater). I'm not crazy about jasmine tea, but I buy it because I love the funny little tin it comes in at the Asian grocery.
ReplyDeleteI like my ice cream primarily with chocolate, nuts and caramel!
I love lavender honey in small amounts, so I think this would be lovely in small amounts, too. The idea Tracey had sounds so pleasing to the eye and palate! Time for a tea party, I think!
ReplyDeleteI do love lavender tea and plan to bake a lavender pound cake, but this sounds---interesting! I'd definately try it!
ReplyDeleteI really wish you would put the forwarding buttons on the bottom of each post! I would love to post some of the wonderful projects and recipes to share with others on FB! We have that feature on our blog so posts of interest can be forwarded by email, or FB/ Hope you will consider it! I'll see a good recipe and think--"my sister would love this"! That feature would enable me to just send it on in a flash!
i once had the best lavender ice cream at a lavender festival in washington state. we tried to replicate it at home and ended over-infusing the cream mixture. it was gray. yikes. it didn't turn out so good (quite medicinal), but i'd still like to try again.
ReplyDeleteHi Anna, I'd eat anything out of that bowl. Francine.
ReplyDeleteI used to love lavender pastilles purchased in the most dainty little tin. That is, until I offered one to a dear old woman who turned up her nose and said, "I don't eat anything that tastes like my soap smells."
ReplyDeleteNow all I can think of is Yardley lavender soap every time I taste lavender. LOL!

Delightful. Can't remember the name of the cookbook now, but I found a recipe for tea ice cream- steep your favorite loose tea, or even bags would work, for a couple of hours in the mixture. I bet you could just do it like you did with the lavendar. It was sooooo good! :)
