Boys with Schematics

The boys did a whole lot of building and rigging this vacation. First Felix built a lamp out of a specimen jar with a horseshoe crab in it (no, he's not selling it at any price, so sorry). Next came various moss gardens and terrariums (terraria?) . . .

and then they decided to build an electric thingy that would sense when the light level is low and turn on the light. Multiple trips to Radio Shack. Lots of soldering.

Bella doesn't think so.

To each his own!

I would be delighted if holidays in my house looked like this in ten years. Thanks for sharing your family with us.

When he was 3 years old, my oldest boy wanted to make a pinecone machine. He drew pictures all the time. It is still unclear to me whether it collected pinecones or created them. I hope that inventiveness continues as he grows into manhood. It certainly looks like it did with your sons!

So, does it work? Or are they still at it?

Your sons are so cute! They look like they are good friends too. And the projects sound wonderful, even to a girl.

Happy New Year - and all the best for you and your family in 2012. Thanks for this blog, I love visiting it.

I asked my husband if he wanted me to get our 8 and 12yo boys a soldering iron for Christmas, but he declined on the belief that they would burn down the house. So instead, I got them twine and bungee cords and a pulley thingy. Don't you know, by the afternoon, those boys had their bedroom door set up to "welcome" all visitors with a booby-trap. Ha!

The boys remind me of my late Dad who was a great one for soldering and making things. In 1957 he apparently built our first television which was then based on valves.

Great fun! I've got a "multiple trips to Radio Shack" boy, too. My grandfather loved to fiddle with electrical projects, and we now live in his house, with all his legacy down in the workshop. I'm happy my oldest son appreciates it all.

With all your homeschool experience, I would love to hear some of your favorite curriculum resources. It seems you have used a Charlotte Mason style schooling with Daisy, do you carry that on with your bigger children? Would love to glean from your experience! Your children are bright and talented and you have obviously done well in inspiring them toward creativity and excellent use of their minds!

Fun! I love breaks and holidays. Our Christmas was filled with crochet, knitting, and baking. The light "thingy" sounds like a great idea.
