The last five days have been consumed by the flu. The week went: sick, sick, sick, exhausted, exhausted.
Right before succumbing though I finished quilting this beauty. The pattern, a quick search reveals, is Arkansas Star (four points, a little awkward). The awesome thing is that all the inter-stellar space is filled with string-quilting, a technique that sews the itty-bittiest scraps together into a larger piece. Some of these are the size of my thumbnail.
I quilted it with both perle cotton and embroidery floss, in blues, greens, and reds. It's bound in silk-linen black (a pair of pants my mother passed on to me). Never did I think I'd bind a quilt in black. You never know, I always say, what's coming down the pike--a week in bed, or a new color of binding.
It's gorgeous Anna, a bit of a diversion in colour for you that binding?
ReplyDeleteI hope you get over the bout of 'flu quickly.
It looks like a wonderfully detailed quilt! I hope you feel better now, flu is so nasty!
ReplyDeleteI had the flu Christmas 2012 and it was ... memorable. I've never felt so bad in my life. Bless you.
ReplyDeletep.s. the quilt is lovely
An elderly lady was just telling me about her string quilts. I will have to investigate further.
ReplyDeleteHope you fell better soon; the flu is awful!!!
I'm glad you're better. The quilt is a beauty.

Binding from pants? Anna you are so creative. I am learning so much from you. Who says the fabric shop is the only way to go?
ReplyDeleteGlad that you are feeling better.

Very unique! I am glad you're feeling better.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that you had the flu. My husband and I both had it over Christmas, and it was dreadful. The quilt is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHi Anna. I am curious about your hand quilting technique. You leave your knots on the outside and don't pull them through to imbed them in the batting. It looks charming. Is that why you leave them that way?
ReplyDeleteYes, I like the added detail. Sometimes I even leave the knots on the front!
ReplyDeleteI believe this is sometimes called a spider web string quilt. There's a free pattern here: http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/string-spider-web.html
