"Many Kinds of Picnics"

"There are as many kinds of picnics as there are families to enjoy them, and no better way has yet been found to entertain guests with children. The simplest kind calls for sandwiches, fruit, tomatoes, hard-cooked eggs, and cookies with a big thermos of milk for the children and one of coffee for the grownups."

We used to have lemonade for us kids, but there Was always coffee for the adults.

I love that they mention tomatoes specifically--tho' as we know, there is nothing else in the world like a home-grown tomato.

Ah, that sounds just perfect. I've really moved away from elaborate picnics. Simplicity all the way for me!

That sounds so nice and refreshing. I think I'll get the picnic basket out...

We are planning a Father's Day picnic out of necessity since we will once again be enroute to summer camp for our daughter. We are planning on cold mommy fried chicken, potato salad, veggies and dip, lemonade, and some sort of transportable sweet - possibly german choclate cup cakes or mini cheese cakes - all prepared by the children and I in honor of their daddy. I had forgotten about the deviled eggs, so I'm glad your post reminded me to add them to the menu!
