"If You Come to Enjoy Cooking"

"For a long time now we have been given a heavy dose of propaganda from the food industry that [we] haven't got time to cook anymore. But what are we saving all the time for? Another half-hour of television? If you come to enjoy cooking, that half-hour of cooking will become the high point of your day . . . . "

Amen.

Amen is right!

Not to mention that cooking is usually quicker than the time it takes to drive somewhere, get the food, and drive back, plus less expensive and way more nutritious.

It's fun to bring all the seemingly unrelated ingredients together into something that smells and tastes wonderful.

I'm with Fannie! :o)

This must be true. I was just going to blog this week about This Very Issue--my deep, dark confession that I do not like to cook. (Yet? I HOPE!) My best friend loves it, my husband loves it, but I can never seem to find the joy. So utilitarian, and impatient: when hungry, I wish to eat. Now. Then get on with things. It's a true fault.

Marion, you must be right. I would love to count cooking as a high point of my day!

HOW does one "come to enjoy cooking"? I'm 54 and very inexperienced... At this point, where/how does one learn basic techniques? (We also don't have an oven.)

This sounds like a very wise woman to me. I would substitute all manner of pursuits that could be enjoyed before an extra hour of tv.

I had forgotten all about this little domestic nugget of encouragement from Marion,
and you have reminded me at just the right time...
My delight in this area has been waning and this serves to turn my head and heart back in the right direction.

Mmm...maybe we'll have breakfast for dinner this cool evening!

I absolutely LOVE the Fannie Farmer cookbook, (and the baking book, too) I was first given a paperback copy as a bride, completely wore that one to shreds and replaced it with a later hardback edition that is well-worn now too. I treasure it and have given newer updated versions for bridal shower gifts more times than I can remember. It is the Bible for the kitchen, IMHO. Blessings, Marie

What an awesome quote! I love to cook and often do it just for pleasure when I don't really NEED to. It's a creative outlet for my energies. :) Plus its so rewarding to create good meals for my little family.

Anna - I just finished reading your entire blog from beginning to end. WOW. Thanks for the reminders that beauty can be found everywhere. Thanks for the inspiration. Thanks for the parenting tips (I have no children yet but maybe some day..)I ordered iron on transfers and I'm going to try embroidering some kitchen towels for my little house.

Thanks again,

I wholeheartedly agree! Such a great quote.

I learnt to love cooking by learning how to do it alongside my mother & grandmother (she lived with us until I was 11). Sure, the methods & techniques were taught but the love of cooking was fostered each step of the way. It was never simply a chore & I'm so thankful that my mother & grandmother were never in too much of a rush to let me take my sweet time measuring, stirring, & reading the recipe aloud. And they never minded the additional mess that usually resulted - we learnt to clean up after ourselves by doing it alongside them, together.

To this day I LOVE to cook all manner of things - last night's endeavours produced 6 dozen mini muffins (orange & cranberry) & 2 loaves of banana bread. Surely more beneficial to me than an hour in front of the television?

I LOVE to cook! I get in the kitchen and get in my own little world. My daughter so badly wants to be in that world, too, and she's only 2! So, we putter in the kitchen and create food for our family. Fun!

I couldn't agree more! I am a busy mama with little time for "hobbies," so I pour my creative energies into cooking and baking. So satisfying to my creative AND my practical needs.
