Chocolate-Pecan Phyllo Rolls

Paging through my recipes this morning I realized I had some thawed phyllo dough in the fridge. Who cares that I thawed it six weeks ago? I'm here to tell you that if it's in a plastic bag, nothing bad is going to happen. Not having pistachios on hand, I decided to switch a few ingredients out and make Chocolate-Pecan Phyllo Rolls.

Why does Martha Stewart do things the hard way? This recipe says to put your chocolate-nut mixture into a ziploc bag with the corner cut out and *pipe* it onto the phyllo sheet. Nope. I just spooned it in place and I'm sure that was faster and less wasteful.

We ate these with enthusiasm.

Why? So we mere mortals have more to worship?

I feel the same way about the tool for making meringues that we have. It's much easier, less wasteful and less messy just to spoon them onto the baking pan. Not that effective looking, but in this family they always disappear very quickly anyway.

When I make my phyllo dough, like any other bread, it has to be frozen because it's preservative free! It's a little time-consuming, like puff pastry, but the results are phenonemal!

Aaaah, Martha Stewart.
I watch her Holiday Specials nearly every year. One specific year, maybe ten years ago, she had Miss Piggy helping her with a gingerbread house construction. I nearly choked to death laughing when Martha was putting several hundred Necco wafers on the roof in "perfect rows" and Miss Piggy leans toward the camera and muttered, "One thousand man-hours later..." Martha got all flustered and then you could see her subconsciously shoot a glare AT THE DOLL. LOL!
Martha is great ~ but she has her place.
Yummy dessert, Anna, and good for you for resisting the call to pipe "perfectly!"

That photograph looks so good. I could eat the computer screen.

I have the same gripe w/ Martha--she often makes things needlessly complicated. So my method is like yours--take her for the inspiration, then modify her ideas to suit my far less perfectionistic tendencies!

heeeee - Martha is fun to look at for inspiration, but truly, she's not a very practical advisor.

I mentally filed that piece of info that phyllo can survive for 6 weeks in plastic :)
