I've never owned a bird, so found myself googling grit and birds. However, I'm none the wiser, so I'll as you - why does Frederick have a cup of grit in his cage? And while I'm asking, I read that birds enjoy bathing - does Frederick take baths or showers?
Shelley, they need to eat a little bit of this crushed grit to maintain their calcium levels. And I think it help them to digest their food.
Frederick's baths are very entertaining. He disdains a bathing dish, but instead, about every five days, waits til I am running the vacuum, then bathes in his water dish by perching on its edge and throwing vast amount of water around up under his wings and everywhere else.
I discovered your blog and just wanted to say hi from Italy. I'm slowly reading all your past entries and being inspired to finally put my home in order. Your writing is really adorable and really inspires my femininity. Thanks for all you do. Anto
I am an evangelical Christian. I have two daughters whom I homeschool: Bella (15), and Daisy (8), and three older children: Giles (21), a college graduate, Felix (19), a college junior, and Clara (17), a college freshman. I'm 42 years old and happily married to my Dear Composer. We live in a 1920's school converted into a home, outside of town. And God is good.
Feel free to Pin my photos, but please link back to the page you found them on.
Photography
Photography is an important part of life at my house. Photos that appear here are taken by Giles, by the Composer, and by me. Giles is a real, paid photographer, and he uses a Sony Alpha. Most of the photography prior to September 2008 is his. Since then I have done most of the shooting and I use a Konica Minolta. Additionally, the Composer offers me nice shots on occasion, often from his little Canon point and shoot. I've given up trying to note who's done what. Thanks for your interest!

Frederick is clearly a very entertaining pet.
eavistWhat a character! I would love to know why the vacuum triggers his bathing instinct.

I can relate.
Our cat used to like sleeping in/on an empty Kleenex box. He would overflow its sides but eschewed his cushion lined basket every time.

Fredrick is very cute! I love birds and I want an African Grey. Right now (among other pets) I have a budgie named Kiki.
I can't IMAGINE that would be comfortable, but, I guess...whatever floats his boat...or rocks his grits cup...OR ruffles his feathers. :D
