Middlemarch, and a Cat

Ah "Middlemarch", a book I haven't read for a year or two -- I first read it when I was around Clara's age. Clara if you enjoy that, a lighter but similar type of writing is the hilarious "Lucia and Mapp" series by E.F. Benson. Interestingly, Benson was a man who could understand his female characters brilliantly, whereas Eliot, as you know, was a woman who had a similar ability with her male characters.

Fitzwilliam is certainly a major lap occupier!

A good book and a cat in one's lap = utter contentment

(And I'm always glad to hear of FW -- Sister has been hogging the limelight a bit.:)

Casaubon would be a good name for a cat.

I love Middlemarch... one of my favorite novels. And I heartily second the recommendation for Mapp and Lucia. There are others in the series with the same characters and Mapp and Lucia isn't even the first, but it is the one I believe everyone should begin with to really fall in the love with them. Once you've read Mapp and Lucia and have fallen in love with the endearingly quirky and oftentimes snarky characters, then you can go back and read the others.
