A Spur-of-the-Moment Quilt Top: Urban Renewal

Like someone who eats the whole package of cookies so it will stop tempting them, today I pieced this whole quilt so it wouldn't sit there distracting me from things I should be doing. I'm calling it Urban Renewal.

I had the pieces cut out--it's simply garments cut into as big of rectangles as I could get out of each shape. If you've ever taken a random assortment of rectangles and tried to piece a quilt, you will know what a miracle it was that this went together like a dream with no measuring at all. The force was with me.

I'm curious - how do you arrange your pieces? Do you pretty much pluck them from a few well-managed presorted piles, one by one as you are stitching, or is it totally random, or ..... however you did this, the result is very interesting. ~Diane

This is lovely as always, beautiful colours. Anna have you considered doing some abstract paintings based on your quilts? Angela.

I love it! The name and the colors and the method. I made a quilt with different size squares and really loved how it turned out - I should do that again.

Diane, I tried to pick up pieces that had matching edges. Or close enough, that I didn't mind trimming a piece down an inch or so. Then I would hunt for the next piece with an edge that matched something. I made nine big squarish shapes, each about 28 inches square, laid them out in a 3 x 3 grid, sewed them together, then started adding pieces around.

Angela, what a question! Because I just did my first one last week! And started my second one this week.

Margo, I'd love to see your work.
Lisa and Debbie, thanks!
