Giles Checks Out Chicago

This weekend Giles and the Composer visited Columbia College Chicago.

I believe they experienced genuine Chicago weather as their ears are red in all their pictures.

Even the indigenous pigeons needed to warm their toes at the eternal flame.

That's a big city!

Giles has ranked Columbia second to SCAD; Columbia is more fine arts than he is looking for. He reported that all of the first year is spent shooting with film, rather than digitally, and he doesn't want to spend a whole year working with film. However, he did enjoy a giant cheese-free pizza.

Chicago is my favorite city.

However, having spent our last family vacation there (before my daughter was married) in a very windy month of March... it can be COLD!

And we Chicagoans thought it was quite balmy this weekend! :-)

My pastor came from being a college minister at SCAD. Hope Giles finds the right place for his gifts.

We are used to this type of weather-it was actually a bit on the warmer side as our Feb was VERY cold. We don't go to the big city very often although it is close, the places to go there and things to see are so wonderful!

Hi Anna,
I showed my husband (a professional photographer)this entry, as he has often commented on your son's enormous talent. He thought it was amazing that Columbia was so forward-thinking as to insist on the first year being devoted to film. Having been in the industry for more than 30 years, (including a stint lecturing at our local college in the photographic department) he is a great believer in having a firm foundation in film. He often comments on how it enhances and enriches your ability digitally, because of it's beautiful, rich and tactile qualities. Just thought I'd pass those perspectives on for your son to consider :o)
The photograph of the city is breathtaking - the burnished sky looks like a painting from the Renaissance era. Looking forward to seeing how this talent goes from strength to strength.

I must admit one of the reason I love your blog is that my 13 year old has professional goals rather like Giles. I had SCAD on my mind. The Art Institute school seemed too "art" and not enough 'design"--I didn't know about Columbia. Thanks for the tip to file away for 5 years from now. Hope he gets in. A high school friend of mine [back in the dark ages!] went to Brooks/Brooking?? I remember you mentioned it. I know it was an awesome experience back in the day!

I don't know if he's looked into this program, but Kansas University in Lawrence just started up a Photo Media degree. I'm enrolling in 2009.

By the way, I love your blog.
