In the Vintage Kitchen: Butterscotch Brownies


These have become my go-to bar cookie for all cookie situations. They mix up so quickly and are frighteningly good. I've been serving them, still warm, to our Wednesday night Bible study group, and I have no intention of stopping.


I generally double this recipe, add a bag of butterscotch chips, and bake in a 13x9 pan for eight extra minutes.

  6. I thought that page looked fimilar so I grabbed my copy of Betty Crocker's Cooky Book which used to be my Grandma's. I checked the index for Butterscoth Brownies & sure enough same exact page you've got there.

    I also use the sugar cookie recipe from this book & the spritz cookies at Christmas time.

    I'm going to go bake some now!

    I couldn't resist.
    I whipped up a panful for tonight's dessert using all Prairie Gold flour and chocolate chips. Butter really does lend the most superior flavor.
    The aroma throughout the house will set us all to sweet slumber.

    Such inspiration!

  13. Rose, butterscotch chips are shelved with the chocolate chips at the grocery store. They are the same size and shape, but made from butterscotch candy.

  14. I may have to branch out from my regular brownies (which are dessert bliss as far as I am concerned) and try these. I had never used butterscotch chips until last year when I accidentally bought some and added them to my peanut butter cookies. Now my husband doesn't want anything to do with peanut butter cookies that don't have the butterscotch chips and neither do I. I am glad to find another recipe using the little darlings.

    A question about the butterscotch chips: do they have an artificial aftertaste to anyone else? Maybe I am buying the wrong kind? I just wondered because I want to try this recipe! :)Maybe I will just use chocolate chips,can't really go wrong with those!
